I plant mine at least 8in apart, so i can hoe between them when they start to bulb up.

I planted mine about 6" apart. Out of 60 or so red onions i've got about 10 that i don't think are affected. Out of the 60 vento, i may get about 30, so the rope of onions and small onions may still be on...that's if i can actually get round to weeding in between them to find out for sure.

a bit more info on this, my daughter came home from work today and the lady she works with has an allotment. Her onions have gone exactly the same way as mine, as have others on different allotments on the same plot. From talking to her friends who have allotments in different areas of the town, they too have problems. It would appear there is an epidemic in Shrewsbury
