Every year we count our bats for the national bat monitoring programme.
The first year (2004) we had 2 bats, year on year they increased and in 2009 we had 8. Last year the numbers dropped back to 2 (we were gutted), this year we have 7 with a possible eighth (we couldn't quite make out where it came from).
We have the 417th largest colony of common pipistelles in the UK (out of 480). ;D

I couldn't count mine. I hardly see them, but we do have them. Do you know where yours actually live?

Our roost is a summer roost, the live behind the fascia boards all around the house. You need to go out just before dusk to see them emerge.

We are officially batty too. ;D I can't remember what they are - OH sent some droppings from the loft off to the Bat people, who sent us some leaflets and a possible ID. They're not Pipistrelles, though. I love seeing them in the summer. They should be about - I must check on that. Thanks for the reminder!

We don't have any living in our garden as far as I know but we do always have at least one which flies around the garden each evening at dusk, the most I've ever seen is 2 together here, I think they're pipistrelles. They've just mentioned bat recording on Springwatch so I was thinking about this, I record ours for the Mammals Trust each summer.

If you found out who your local bat person was Sue they would be able to ID them for you, each species uses a different frequency. Geranium, have you thought about recording your bats for the National Bat Conservation Trust? It doesn't take long and the information would be very useful to them. You don't have to join or take part in anything else, it takes a couple of hours twice a year and would make a big difference. www.bats.org.uk/pages/nbmp.html
