I've just painted a 6ft tall wooden obelisk for the garden & am thinking of growing a small climbing rose through it & wondered if anyone has any ideas/recommendations on this. In July's G.A. mag., Geoff recommended one called 'Open Arms' which sounds suitable, it's a patio climber & white/pinkish flowers but doesn't have much scent. I'd like something white or pink, not much taller growing than 6-8ft, healthy, long or repeat flowering & scented (not asking much! ;D) Others which sound O.K. are 'Little Rambler', 'Nice Day', 'White Cloud' & 'Creme de la Creme'. Does anyone have any of these? I've won 2 tickets to Tatton from the RHS & am probably going on Friday so will be able to have a look around there for ideas.

You probably know my favourite is the thornless Zepherine Drouhin which is supposed to have blackspot, but doesn't here. I will be changing one of my roses which has an unbelievable amount of huge thorns for Eden Rose which is recommended by Alan Gray of East Ruston Old Vicarage. If you like red, Dublin Bay is not too big and quite strong with a long flowering season, but there is no scent.
You do well at winning tickets Sue. Have a good time.

I've added Zepherine Drouhin to my 'wish list' too now Cherry, I'd forgotten about that one, it is lovely & being thornless is a bonus, if it does suffer a lot from black spot it might not do well here as we get that a lot now & I don't want to spray. Merlin if you have 5 'Open Arms' it must be a good one! The David Austin Handbook of Roses arrived in the post this afternoon (first post 3.45pm!) & I've now added a few more:- The Generous Gardener, Claire Austin & St. Swithin.

I have Zepherine too, and she is lovely. She does get black spot here, sadly. Look at my new one - 'Alibaba' - I simply love it! Repeat flowering, fragrant, very pretty corally-rose colour. ;D I do also have 'Dublin Bay' - a gorgeous colour, but not pink as you asked for. It's very healthy, though, and keeps on and on flowering. 'Handel' is a beauty...do you know that one?

Thanks for the suggestions, lots of them look interesting, I'll have to have a good look. I've got New Dawn already Seaburn, I love it but am looking for something different this time. Handel does sound suitable Geranium & Compassion too Derek, I'm just wondering if they might be a bit too vigorous?

We might end up going to Tatton on Saturday or Sunday now as the tickets are 'any day' & the weather sounds a bit dodgy for tomorrow.

Sue, I wouldn't call 'Handel' vigorous. I wanted to train it along and over the wall, and it's grown about 5' - 6' in two years. It's a good repeat flower-er. ;D

We went on Saturday and really enjoyed it. Hope you get the right rose though at this time you've not long to wait for a bare-rooter.

I think if you book in advance Merlin you have to specify a day but mine were complimentary 'any day' from the RHS & we ended up going on Saturday, I didn't spot you, I would have waved & said Hello! ;D I had a good look round for roses but there weren't many & the only one of the suggestions I saw was 'Handel' on the Fryers Roses stand, they were selling potted roses for £7 which I thought was a good price but I wasn't keen on Handel when I saw it in the flesh as it had no scent, the guy said it only had a faint scent but I couldn't smell anything & the flowers on them looked a bit 'hit & miss', some nice some not so.
