Oh - that's a shame, Sue! I really love mine. I wonder what was wrong with the plant?

They had 4 pots of 'Handel' Geranium, one of them had nicely shaped & coloured roses but was very thorny & only had a couple of slightly spindly stems & the others were a bit varied but the lack of scent did put me off, maybe they were just leftover slightly less than perfect plants they were trying to get rid of as they were cheap.

Well, I wouldn't have bought one of those plants either! The first time I went to buy a 'Handel', I got a healthy plant with no open flowers. When one opened, it was obvious that it had been wrongly labelled. I did get my 'Handel' eventually - Louise and I took every pot off the bench at the GC and checked to make sure! ;D ;D

I think if you book in advance Merlin you have to specify a day but mine were complimentary 'any day' from the RHS & we ended up going on Saturday, I didn't spot you, I would have waved & said Hello! ;D I had a good look round for roses but there weren't many & the only one of the suggestions I saw was 'Handel' on the Fryers Roses stand, they were selling potted roses for £7 which I thought was a good price but I wasn't keen on Handel when I saw it in the flesh as it had no scent, the guy said it only had a faint scent but I couldn't smell anything & the flowers on them looked a bit 'hit & miss', some nice some not so. A belated wave to you Sue, it would have been nice to meet. What did you think of the music at the band-stand? I couldn't stop my feet tapping. I used to have 'Handel' but the flowers never looked like they should. Very few roses at the show, Fryers don't sell the two I want I'll order bare-rooted later.

I've got Handel aswell and I think it's a lovely rose. It isn't very vigorous but the blooms are a lovely shape and colour. Not much scent I agree, but that might not be so important if you've got other scenty ones.
Zephrine does get a lot of black spot. I understand Gertrude Jekyll is a nice one aswell but I haven't got it.

Thanks Hywel, I've got Gertrude Jekyll & love it, I've decided to go & have a wander around Fryers Roses which isn't too far from me & have a look at what they've got. I'd really like something scented & ones which say light or medium scent just don't seem to register with me even though I usually have quite a good sense of smell. I'd like something which the bees etc. would be attracted to aswell.

I hope you find something you like. Another pink one I've got is Paul's Scarlet, but it hasn't got a scent. Crown Princess Margreta is a pleasantly scented climber but it's a yellowy/peachy colour so unfortunately doesn't fit your criteria. Good luck with your search anyway

In our new scented garden. I've planted Gertrude Jekyll, Claire Austin, Shropshire Lad, Generous Gardener and St Swithin. All are gorgeous and from David Austin. All will climb to about 8ft, especially like St Swithin and Gertrude Jekyll - and Claire Austin I think is the best white scented rose available.
Happy Hunting

I agree, Clair Austin is a lovely rose..I love the pale lemony centre while the blooms are opening...Apparently white roses are very difficult to breed. I have Shropshire Lad too....another gorgeous rose ;D

Thanks Bists & all! I've been drooling over the David Austin catalogue too, if I don't find anything locally I may end up sending for one from them, they do some as container roses or I might wait & send for a bare root later.

Couldn't wait, you know how it is lol. Called Bridgemere and they had the two DA roses I wanted so we wnet and collected them at the weekend. They have a really good selection and it's all been re-vamped, much better. Now I've got the six shrub roses in and looking healthy.

If you can wait for a bare root it is so much cheaper. I ended up spending a fortune on container roses for the scented terrace as I needed them quickly - cost over £1400 - and I've got another 45 bare root David Austin roses coming in a few months. Very tempting to get the odd one from David Austin though and the quality of the plants that arrived in the containers was amazing!!

The seven container roses I got from Harkness and Fryers a couple of weeks ago were excellent - I couldn't fault them. I didn't want to wait for bare rooted plants, I wanted to get the area planted up ASAP. Yes, they were more expensive, but I'm still glad I did it. ;D
