I'm very tempted to do an experiment after this and put a row of sets in late Autumn down the allotment....we all know they will come up if planted deep enough to survive frosts but what will the yields be like? I presumed you were talking about the keeping ability of seed grown onions compared to set grown. If you were, I’ll join you, I have already put my sets in and they are doing well. I have some onion seed, red and white, although the packet does say to sow in March. Should I sow it now in the green house and plant them out in March?

On the onion seed it is traditional among allotment folk to sow just after Christmas to try and get the largest possible onion and outdo each other , Yes even though it says sow in March you can sow now in a propagator Sue

Boys and toys I had a look at my seeds and the red ones I shall sow now but the white ones are Japanese onions and should be sown in the autumn. That could be another interesting comparison.

I see Hi-keeper from T&M is sown by some at this time of year. Any suggestion in the suttons range, as I have all the seeds I need for this year and I'm not going to order just one packet of seed from T&M

Started off Toughball and Karmen today, to be grown at home due to problems with alium leaf miner at the allotment last year. This means no room for the big ones, which isn't too much of a problem as i wasn't going to grow them due to my knee op.
