Thanks everyone I like plants that look weird ;D Esther beehive gingers are pretty hardy if you grow bananas maybe you can give it a try, it flowers once the tubers have grown about 3 stalks and keeps on blooming until it gets too cold. My dad says most gingers takes up too much space in the conservatory in winter though. Cherry I used to swap ginger seeds with a lady in Brisbane unfortunately she moved and had to give away most of her plants. I forgot the name of the nursery where she got most of them from, she said the nursery (somewhere in Australia) specializes in tropical plants. Maybe your daughter might have an idea? I would love to be able to go to Australia again and visit other botanic gardens I've only been to Australian National and Albury. Steve there's a lot of beehive gingers esp in Thailand and Hawaii. I think in Hawaii they call it shampoo ginger although where we're at shampoo ginger is what we call the ones that bloom at the top of a leaf stalk like the way heliconias do. Smaller flowers but same beehive look. Mine throws out flowers on their own stalks, leaves in another.

How interesting Jrae. My great aunt lived in Albury and I loved staying with her. I have been to Sydney Botanic but Melbourne is far better and starts right near the city. My two daughters live on Magnetic Island just off Townsville.

I have some lovely Phlox in my garden - I inherited some of them, which I think are 'Johann Strauss' but I've added to them over the years. It's sich a shame that the incessant rain is spoiling them so fast this year. Here are a few of them. 'Magic Blue' A sea of lilac! 'Frans van Tol' I also have a mass of white ones, but they're always the last to flower.
