I planted ginger and fertilised the turmeric and pandanus. It is too hot to expend any energy. I am trying to get the garden in a condition to look after itself. Watering is the main problem and Jeremy is working on the automatic watering with the bore water. We planted out my lime and lemon trees and covered them with net to prevent possums from eating the fruit. They were previously in large pots.

Planted out the goodies which came from J. Parker yesterday, potted up the lily bulbs & put the begonia corms in a tray of compost to start them off in the greenhouse. Removed a lot of dead perennial leaves etc. from around the bulbs which are suddenly springing to life now that the sun has made a brief appearance, did a bit of weeding (mainly herb Robert & grass) & made a start on pruning the roses.

I planted my lilies, peony and the free phlox from Parkers yesterday too, also sowed some sweetpeas. Swept up some of the leaves and cut a couple of perennials back, but it was too wet and turned quiet cold so went back indoors

We worked hard yesterday after having the fence done, we made a new soft fruit border with raspberries blueberries and black currants all looking good and will be much easier to pick now. Went out again this morning while it was dry just to tidy up veg plot and see to strawberries getting rid of all the old leaves, i then came in as it turned wet and cold at least I've made a start.

I took advantage of the dry weather yesterday & planted out 25 snowdrops 'in the green' from Parkers & 3 peonies 'Shirley Temple', 'Karl Rosenfield' & 'Sarah Bernhardt' from an offer by T&M & potted up some tulip bulbs & 'Painted Lady' & a few other miniature irises I found in the greenhouse - bit late, I'd lifted them from pots last year & forgotten about them -again!

Re Sue's planting of snowdrops, those I planted a week or so ago are flowering their little socks off. Yesterday planted out veronica first love, potted on thalictrum Elin and divided rudbeckia Goldsturn and potted up into 3 x 3 litre pots. Also fed hellebores with fish blood and bone; applied sequestered iron to rhodos and azaleas in pots. not sure how much time I will have today for the garden but the spring urge is growing fast

I keep telling myself I don't intend to plant too many seeds this year either. But then so many pretty catalogues keep turning up Been making sure everything is warm enough, and tidying up the border opposite the front door. I've got 4 bird feeders hanging in the hedge at the end of the border this year, and i've been surprised how much mess the birds make, and the blackbirds and pigeons stomp around underneath to clear up the dropped seeds. Must make sure I plant something tough there next year - the little campanulas that I put in last year, have been ruined. It's worth it to watch the birds though.

I've been going out in the dark & lighting the candles under the pot in the greenhouse the last couple of nights as it's been quite cold & it did feel slightly warm in there yesterday morning. I managed to plant out the peony which arrived the other day, the ground was O.K., not frozen or too soggy & I planted it with some compost, bonemeal & mychorrizal fungi to try & give it a good start. Also split & repotted a couple of pots of chives & thyme which I got from Tesco the other day, put some in the kitchen & some in the greenhouse.

Finished another box of eggs so I put the 'Violetta' seed potatoes out to chit. They're a main crop variety really but it said they can be grown as an 'early' type which is what I prefer so I'm treating them as that & going to grow them in containers, too wet to do anything outside in the garden.

We have started our seed potatoes chitting in The Boss' bedroom window - Maris Piper and international kidney and started bringing home donkey and horse manure ready for filling our new vegetable raised beds that we hope to make next month. The Boss would like to try his hand at local show veg growing. He sold his big old trampoline to make extra space too. He will have a special sand bed for stump root carrots too. As well as donkey and Oss' muck The boss plans on using last years patio pot compost that he has saved, 2 bays of home made compost we have made and compost from the neighbours bin and top soil they have removed from where they kept their chickens. Good stuff eh!
