I found a pack of Iris reticulata which I haven't planted. They look all right ...

I've also found a pack of grape hyacinths. I hope to plant them this afternoon.

managed to get a morning outside at last, started clearing up leaves and branches that have come down in the storms, cutting dead off perennials, attacked the wisteria tied some into the arch and pruned quite a bit out, potted up some acidanthera bulbs to put out later, pruned a couple of clematis. The ground is still quite wet so couldn't do too much, I can see plenty of weeds that need to come out

I ought to start sowing a few seeds, seriously, must do it next week! Today I was having a tidy up with incinerator going, but I kept the big bucket of dead leaves I collected to put on the compost. Nice to see the blackbird was having a good sort out and turn over in the hedge too - no doubt looking for a good nest.
The weeds certainly are getting going now - bittercress seems to just suddenly turn into a carpet when you're not looking. I'm actually cultivating the thistles in my front border for the tortoises - no idea what the neighbours think!

Had a good day drastically pruning some shubs that had got out of hand, ended up filling 7 bags for recycling

We went to Bents yesterday as they sent an email saying that 'Inspired' members (their loyalty card) could pick up a free primrose & bag of strawberry chewy sweets by showing their card as it was national 'random act of kindness day' & they were celebrating being named garden centre of the year. Also went to Fryers for a look around & to get a few pots & potted up the primrose, a little plant I think is salvia 'Royal Bumble' from a pot knocked over by the 'concreters' next door & the ceonothus I got the other week & put them on the patio.

Yes grindle, I've been there a few times, he opens for other charities as well, I think he's having a lot of alterations done at the moment. Last time we went John was pottering around the garden & ended up chatting to me & showing me round & recommending other gardens I might like, I was telling him I'd pinched some ideas from him years ago in our old garden. We went to a potato day at Hulme Community garden centre yesterday & I got some Charlotte & Colleen seed potatoes which I've put out to chit & then went for a 'snowdrop walk' at Rode Hall where I got a primrose for £1 & a little bunch of snowdrops in the green for £2 so I planted them in the border when we got home - border very wet though so didn't do anything else.

Managed to get in the garden yesterday & do some clearing up, pruning & cutting back dead foliage & old hellebore leaves etc., filled the space in my compost bin & the whole council 'green rubbish' bin. Cleaned the bird feeding trays, messy job as all the rain 'melts' the suet treats into a stinking mess & everything sticks to the fine mesh - lots of scrubbing with water & an old toothbrush!

Bess I wouldn't put a lot of leaves on the compost as they will slow down your compost 'cooking'. Reason is that your compost rots down by bacterial action and leaves by fungal action. Of course I mean fallen TREE leaves not tea leaves leaves at best collected separately and left to rot down to be used as leafmould. Sorry if I sound a bit picky on this. see here: link

At last, got the trusty old lawnmower out of the shed and cut one of the lawns. Not perfect as I have to wiggle it round the primroses as I like to see them flowering. left the other grass areas to dry out a bit more.

My lawn doesn't seem to be growing too much yet, although I have thought about cutting it soon whilst it's not too long, especially if I can get it dry enough first.
