caretaker I only water when I think of it, which has been not at all over this last busy period. I did water two days ago. Tel might have the answer. I think you might be watering too much. Is it the flower which is bending over the pot? This does not sound too good. Is it a new Clivia?

caretaker you could try pushing a thin stick into the pot beside the bulb & tying the amaryllis flower stalk to it. It might be that you're overwatering it as Cherry suggests, I just feel the compost around the edge of the bulb to see if it's dry, that's after I managed to make one rot by watering it too much! Having said that I'm rubbish at looking after houseplants & have a clivia & amaryllis with just a few sorry looking leaves on them at the moment & a kalanchoe which is flowering but sprawling all over the front room window!

Tomorrow I will put a stick down the side of the pot and tie with some wool, cut down on my watering, get Pat (my wife) to feel around the edges of the pot. Did I tell you I have little feeling in my hands, I have to be very aware of things hot and cold, wet and dry, it's a bit of a pain some times. They seem to be very nice flowers, but its early days yet. Thanks for all the tips, Reg

caretaker I hope I haven't given you the wrong advice, because I was talking about my Clivia. I don't know about Amaryllis. So sorry. I am sure Lou78W and Geranium will add to Sue's advice and help you out. I am quite neglectful with the Clivias because they are just park bedding flowers in Australia.

I have a Amaryllis but it keeps bending over the pot, how often do I water it as at the moment I water ever day. To day NO water it was up right till mid day then flop, down it went but now it is back up again. Don't know if to water or not. No, I only water mine occasionally (when the compost looks dry-ish), and feed it too.I think you're watering it far too often! The bulb will rot if you do.

Geranium, I've been given an Amaryllis as a gift, it was already potted when I received it and now has two flower stems, not yet open but should be double red flowers. I'm wondering what to do once it has finished flowering, I'd like to keep it for next year if its not too much trouble, would appreciate some advice please

You need to water and feed it and keep it going until the leaves have faded, (you can cut off the spent flowers) then keep the bulb in a cool place until next autumn when you pot it up again and off it should go! I put a rubber band round mine with the name label, and keep them in a tray on the greenhouse shelf. Good luck with it - double flowers sound lovely!

My amaryllis are still growing but I have a random Geranium looking nice at the moment - I don't usually keep them over winter as we don't have much room. But this one was trying so hard to flower outside in late Nov that I took pity on it, and it's been lovely inside over Christmas. Sorry about all the background junk in the pic - my worktable was the only place with bright enough light. Have loads of lovely orchids out at the moment too, they're really my husband's but as he 'buys them for me' when he needs an excuse, I lay claim to any particularly lovely ones! Dendrobium nobile; Again, rather awful lighting, but it's been so dark and gloomy here the last couple of days.

Just to add to the comments on Amarylis (Hippeastrum).....if you keep them in direct sun, the heat can make the stem flop over.......water from the bottom is preferable too...... (staking is a good idea)...

My Lonicera purpusii is in flower. I love it! I also have one solitary snowdrop out. Nice to think of spring, isn't it!
