I too was at the allotment this morning in the rain and finally got the new doors made and hung on the tunnel.

Thank you David. Next job is to build a largish cold frame.

At the plot this morning I started by doing a little bit of tidying up in the tunnel. I then emptied and cleaned a few bird feeders which are yet to be visited. After that, I harvested some mature runner beans which will be dried to supply my bean seed for next year.

Was rained off gardening-wise today. So went to the plot and started work on the coldframe using the recycled glazing panels from the free greenhouse.

Just tipped out some of my 17 litre potato bags. Blue belle and Casablanca. Made a few 'sets' of 5 to be left dirty until just before showing. The ones that didn't make the beauty contest will be eaten! Tied up lots of Dahlias and some disbudding/cutting off tired blooms. peeled a few cracked skins off my Jermor shallots ready for re-tying the necks. Always something to do on the plot as you know! Here's a pic, in the left foreground you'll see my Chilli Cayennes growing happily outdoors, have a couple of dozen plants.
Could I ask what's the name of the orange/bronze cactus in the middle of the dahlia beds? Thanks

Hi Anthony, it's a medium SC I originally got from Parkers. (Flixton, Manchester) They have some really presentable garden type Dahlias for next to nothing. I've grown it as a show Dahlia 7/8 up. Be nice in your garden but very little depth to it as a show bloom. Still available as far as I know. They make huge field tubers btw. Wont be growing it again next year. Almost forgot, it's 'Gold Crown' or 'Golden Crown'. www.jparkers.co.uk/3-dahlia-golden-crown

Took advantage of the dry breezy conditions. Got the allotment mowers out of hibernation and did the grass. It's been growing like the clappers with the mild wet conditions. 4 boxes of sclippings, looks tons better. My oldest mower was reluctant to start, had to do the old dodge of a capful of petrol down the spark plug hole. Boom, instantly fired up. Done the machines good, cleared out the carbs of stale petrol as old petrol deteriorates as Dai will know....

At the allotments this morning I started putting the small shed up which will take the contents of what will be the workshop. Would have got it finished, but other committee members turned up and we had something of a planning session. And tea.

That's looking good @davidv. Even the grass up here has grown a wee bitty!

Thanks Rosie, it's a first for me cutting grass on December the 29th! I think January will bring proper winter weather though.

I fear you are right about the weather David. If the temperature suddenly drops the rain will turn to snow and we will be in trouble.

Dai, have you ever heard of 'Victa' lawnmowers? I had one years ago which was being chucked out by someone. No compression. I took the barrel off (easy with it being 2-stroke, just 4 long bolts) honed it out (borrowed a deglazing tool) and stuck new rings on the piston. 160cc 2 stroke, it ran great then, had a heavy wheel where the blade normally goes with 4 short loose blades attached to it. I can honestly say it would go through anything, even 12 inch grass and barely slow down. Downside was the noise, unbelievable, like a plane taking off. Nevertheless, wish I still had it!

Is this a workshop for yourself, daitheplant, or a communal workshop for the allotment holders or something ?

A communal workshop Roofus. Myself and another member will be contributing tools, nuts and bolts and nails etc. Andrew, Victa mowers were real workhorses. Nothing stood in their way. Todays wimpy machines would have no chance against them.
