Thanks Louise, I would like both but Kalmia won't like my soil. I would like a Kolkwitzia though but Crocus say..... "Soil type: acidic, chalky/alkaline, moist, well-drained/light " Can you explain as it appears that it likes both acid and alkaline !!!!

I would say that most plants will grow on any soil type and there are less that are the fussy ones.
I've just looked in the Dr. Hessayon book (The Flowering Shrub Expert) and it says "any soil type will do" so i would buy it !

Merlin, I have a Kolkwitzia (flowering at the moment) and it grows very happily on alkaline soil

As for buying it, I'll have to put it on my wish list for now. Actually I have a 20' X 3'raised bed and I want to put a few flowering shrubs in it next year. I already intend to put a Rose La Renie Victoria so the Kolkwitzia will go with it along with a couple more.

If you had got closer with the top one so it cut out the leaves it would be hard to tell what it was
