Picked a gallon bucket of Blackcurrants this morning. There are at least twice that many left on the bushes. Sadly the fruit is of no use to us so will have to be fed to the birds. Why or have I missed something?

My daughter rescued a fledgling starling from cat and brought it over to ours on Sunday as all the rescue centres were closed. She had been hand feeding it and syringing water down its throat. Her idea was to put it in our walled back yard but I told her that it still wouldn't be safe as its tweeting would attract predators. Unfortunately I was proved right as a magpie had got hold of it and really damaged it so badly it couldn't have recovered so of course it was left to me to put it out of its misery. Something I hate doing but needs must. Nature can be very cruel at times.

On cordon grown SPs you would normally layer or drop the top half down a bit but that doesn't apply here. I would just let them grow and flop down and enjoy them. Keep cutting flowers off.

That must be costing you a fortune sweetpea! P.S. I've just edited out a link which appeared under your photo, they come up occasionally from the 'add image to post' link - just in case you wondered why it says I've edited your post. I didn't know that.

water butts almost completely empty. Re those moor fires. there was a suggestion that some or all may have been started deliberately. if so and they catch whoever responsible the culprit should be held until November 5th and then tied to a post and have the fire built round him. Arsonists, pyromaniacs call them what you will deserve burning at the stake. yes I know I'm too soft for my own good.

latest drama here. Young jackdaw found its way into house and ended up under a low glass coffee table where no one could access it. I finally managed to drive it into a cat carrier and put it out in the back walled courtyard where it would be safe. It was let out in the morning but seemed unable to fly. it did eat all the food we put in the basket overnight. I placed my window cleaning point ladder against a part of wall that juts out and it hopped up the rungs one at a time and stayed up on the wall. every time that I went out to replenish the bird food it would panic and flutter down to the ground but as soon as I went in it would go up the ladder again. We think it had a damaged wing but this morning it had gone. I watched all the jackdaws but every one could fly so I can only presume it had got better.

Sometime back in the '70s we had a drought with the usual hosepipe ban. This was in Surrey on outskirts of London. Anyway my lawn turned brown but when the rains came it quickly recovered. Even if you did end up with a few bare patches you can always scatter a few more seeds. my usual mantra is don't water anything other than container and g'house plants. Works for me.
