Here is a long shot but do any forum members have any stock of our late friend Terry Haigh's Birkenshaw GARDEN friends? His amazing dark red collerettethat I may purchase? Due to our bad season we have lost a lot of stock and we are down to our last 2 tubers. They haven't woken up yet and I would love to build our stocks again...

Hi. Been off the forum for some time due to bad back issues and not being able to dig or anything since last August. I lost my mojo for a long time but after 3 weeks I can finally say the grounds are back to how they were in 2018 and while I am very behind and currently not running with any heat today I have potted 2 rooted cuttings and I have about 100 cuttings that are not floppy yet! Obviously everything is up in the air with Covid19 but whatever happens just enjoy the growing folks

Hi Derek, I have finally come back on the forum after a long break. I had a bad back problem last year and didn't do any growing, just 1 competition and then couldn't manage anything after 5th August until 3 weeks ago. Tonight I have been re reading your getting started on the allotment book to remind myself of a few things now I have my growing mojo back.
I have just read your posts for this season. I sincerely hope Rosemary is feeling better now too. Take care

Hi all. It has been some time since I have been on the forum. I really lost my growing mojo last year due to a long term bad back and it has taken 3 weeks on and off to finally be able to say today my garden is now back to how it was in 2018. I have spent this evening re reading Derek Brook's Getting started on the allotment book to remind myself of some bits and pieces and to plan my planting. Last month I dug up turf and create 3 new veg beds so this has helped me to get the gardening bug again. Small steps

It's a very windy chilly day here in the south west. Our season is going slow so far but we are of the attitude what will be will be. We are not going the Nationals this year unfortunately but we do plan on showing at our village show at the beginning of August and then county shows and perhaps another show a couple of counties up that we have been trying to attend the last couple of years but haven't been able to make it to. Good fortune all

With all the torrential rain we are having i am so glad we stored our dahlias when we did. Only problem is now I have nothing gardening to do! So i guess this weekend the boss and I will update his dahlia scrap book and make our first rough of what we hope to grow next year. No Wisley for us because he is going to next school that week so not possible to take the time off. Therefore a better focus on our local main show bank holiday weekend I think. We are going to see if we can get to Yeovil show the week after Wisley even if just to visit. It will be our 3rd year trying to make it. johndoe Blyton Garnet looks good.

Good morning. Is cool glass easy to use and more importantly remove? Is it available from garden centres or online?

Thanks for letting us know Sue I have been poorly myself and wondered if Derek was unwell. I enjoy his posts they remind me of jobs that need doing or ideas for future growing.

Well what a storm that was. We are very luck to have not suffered any damage this time around. Putting in extra glass clips was a great idea after the losses last year. Not having to water is a bonus too! I hope you have all survived as best you can.
We have cut back half our main plot and will cut the rest next weekend. We shall start lifting our tubers the week after depending on the weather. Yes we do lift ours fairly early but that is so Che can have a few days of potential good weather with it being half term rather than being weekend reliant. We have a vague plan in mind for next year. Any stock we don't plan on keeping will be donated to the school again for their summer fair to raise funds for the children.
We have decided to move our singles and collerettes and increase the numbers of these for the pollinators. We will also be moving the large and giants, although we don't grow many of these. We plan to have less varieties in general for showing but more of. Not masses of numbers but 6s or 10s rather than 4s or 6s - I still want to keep Che interested and as we all know variety is the spice of life!
We hope to reduce the numbers we grow in florist buckets and plan to change how we keep our smaller pot tubers but this thought is still in progress.
My OH has decided that we might be able to configure a gravity fed watering system so that is food for thought for the winter months. I have also decided to change how we support the dahlias in our borders so this will be finalised in the next few months.

It has been great to read these posts and to hear how the club is going. I know our school growing area has various numbers year on year but is admired by many and I am sure without your input it wouldn't be half what it is. Having a person share their knowledge will be a lasting memory for those children so from myself as a parent who likes to pass on skills - thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience through the club and your books

Thank you all. I have not been on the forum recently for two reasons. Firstly my eldest son has completed his advanced college course and joined the army so I have been busy with him and secondly I have taken on extra responsibility at work so has an extra busy end to the term. Fortunately the summer holidays are here and I collect my boy for a 2 week break this week so I will have time to breath. I hope you are all managing to grow something with this heatwave

We have gone into que sera sera mode tonight. The weather is what it is and we can't do anything to change it so if the tubers survive they survive. not worth stressing over...she says
