I don't think you should use your old compost for dahlias either Cat. I do use my old compost again but for different plants. What I have grown pot plants or dahlias in one year I will use for potatoes or perhaps carrots the next year. Thanks @derek, looks like we have a good start for the veggies then

Hi Cat. Hope you and the family are well. My advice would be not to use the old compost, just in case any un-wanted pests have laid eggs over the summer, or some virus, that could be passed on is laying dormant, just waiting for the day you switch the heat on. I think fresh compost, Clover if you can get it, will always be your best option.
I get my Clover from JFH Horticultural. Take a look from the link
www.jfhhorticultural.com/product/1267/multipurpose-compost Thanks johndoe ; yes we are all well. As for old compost we will use it in the bottom of the new beds then

We have spent the last few days on and off lifting and drying tubers removing hair roots and and rotting legs. We are about half way through and with luck the dry is here for the next few days and we can get done before we go back to work/school next week. It has surprised us which tubers have grown well and which haven't made tubers. Barbarry Pip for example no plant has made a tuber. We are keeping the old compost from those tubers grown in buckets to use in the bottom of some new raised beds we are making to grow veg in - waste not want not! Although I wonder could we use it to start the tubers in for taking cuttings? ian johndoe what do you think?

Today we spent most of the day taking soil off the dahlia tubers we had put in the cold greenhouse. These were the ones we had in black florists buckets - about 40 or so. Che also dug up the tubers from the 4 narrow borders - about another 60 or so and we have nearly cleaned all of these up, probably an hour to finish tomorrow. then it will be the main plot - cutting off the tops lifting and putting to dry in the greenhouse before we go back to work/school next week. The best bit of the last few days is Che has decided his big trampoline can go as he no longer uses it and he wants to grow veg again so we have done a large order from Mr Fothergills for seed and we are going to have a look at Medwyns too for some exhibtion veggies - just to have a dabble mind

What a lovely harvest basket Derek. Are those Borlotti beans in the front? I remember my mum growing them but I never knew how she used them. Are they used like broad beans in stews etc?

Raymond do you remove all the blooms except the sport ones to secure it? Not sure of the securing a sport process

johndoe we like you are planning on reducing the number of varieties but wont have Wisley to worry about. We are going to reduce our number of plants too by reducing the numbers of pot grown plants. We never really get them looking as good as we should due to laziness with watering so it's time to do less better rather than more halfheartedly. Che will be showing as an intermediate next season here at CDS shows but I can still show as novice with his leftovers. We are possibly going to try and do Yeovil show too. We had hoped to do Yeovil this year but the rain stopped play by second week of september and so Che decided he had enough. Perhaps next year we will hear of other shows within 100 miles of us, who knows! Let us know you final choices when your sorted it would be a great help to know what others around the country are growing.
