I thought the same with mine. Hardly any growth until the buds appeared, then all of a sudden they shot up producing really long stems. With a bit of luck and no early frosts they may still give you some blooms.

You will love this. I have just had a phone call from the chairwoman of my local show, I have a garden inspection tomorrow, someone said I didn't grow the dahlias I entered into the show. I said they wouldn't like it, I was expecting some back stabbing but I didn't expect this. Don't you just love local shows ;D You realise next year you'll need electric fences and CCTV around your plot

so here they are at the show Third out of 5 for large. Bit more ripe and would have got 2nd i think as they were the most uniform of all the entries These were the winners. Nice and big, but all different sizes and skins mouldy and wrinkly. Who says i'm biased and this was our rope that came 2nd....the middle one

Put 62 exhibits in at Edenfield show and won 9 firsts,16 seconds and 13 thirds. It was a good show with some good exhibits in some classes but overall there wasn,t the same competition as at Knowsley last weekend.Tony Bracegirdle was there again .He had been at Shrewsbury the day before and won every rose class except one and of course he won every class here today. His wife Alice was showing carnations and other things and she did well too. I won in vegetables with a marrow, rhubarb and French beans and in flowers I got my firsts with African marigolds,a vase of mixed annuals and dahlias "taratahi ruby"and in pot plants with a fuchsia and the foliage plant class with a begonia"Little brother Montgomery" Will show you some pictures tomorrow. 62 exhibits is some effort. How long did they take to stage? Well done with the results. Mr Bracegirdles roses looked incredible. So clean. I noticed you did chrysanthemums so here are some of the exhibits at Shrewsbury for you to look at. They all looked pretty good to me for mopheads

This variety is Tropical. Tastes nice. Entered at the show in my sons name. Produces very uniform spaced tomatoes.

Primrose Pastelle. I find this the best for me to grow, never have any problems with the petals fimming and this one of winholme diane shows the lovely pinkish flush that develops after it's been cut a little while

Nice blooms, in my garden the collarettes are a magnet for hover flies and bees.

Unfortunately Sion wasn't at the show. Never known Station House not be there, maybe the recession has a lot to answer for. This is what i had for him This is a pretty close photo of the actual colour. There is the faintish yellow flush around the centre, which i think adds to it. Shape wise, very uniform. Side view below shows the good depth Just praying now i get a good tuber for next years cuttings.

They are Ruskin Andrea.....I would say perfectly weatherproof. I need to learn how to get them a bit smaller.....they were grown with no disbudding as many up as i could get and still hit maximum size, and some bigger!!

and the complete entry, minus a few that had fallen, taken at the end of the show. I missed 4 entries, 1 vase small ball, 3 vases small cactus, 3 blooms giant cactus, and another 6 giants. So considering everything and my suicidal thoughts earlier on , not too bad. And the public enjoyed them which is what it's all about.
