stand up. Got 6 plants of these and can honestly say everyone is different. The first 4 are of one bloom and are what i would call the perfect bloom. Size it is bang on the limit of the ring, centres spot on right to the end, the backs perfect, and the colour steady throughout The photos don't do it justice, However, heres a couple more from other plants. This one more white in the centre, tighter petals and this one a lighter pink and none of them are remotely like the picture from the supplier

I too have some that I am not sure of, my ryecroft Rebel from Halls has turned into a pinky-salmon I will try and get a picture of it later and also one of the Daleko Jupiters has come out awful, the flower was horrible and withered and the colour was white/dirty colour with a pink to it well i rang Halls on saturday, spoke to a young man, and sent an e mail with photographs. Am still awaiting a reply. Perhaps they don't like a bit of criticism. I will follow it up nicely on Thursday ;D

Covers over the giants/mediums gone up today. They are the only ones i cover. Heavy rain forecast the next few days i believe, as long as it stops by Monday i won't mind. Lots of buds opening all over the garden, so many new varieties grown this year it'll be interesting to see what they look like. They are smalls Ruskin Andrea, 6 plants, looks like 6 different colours, all going to go oversize Oretti Bliss, here is the description... Small Cactus Superb white blooms, excellent form, strong stems. And what we have are more cream than white, with one plant out of 6 producing decent stems Brabarry Melody, well what a nightmare to grow, but have managed to restrict it to 6 buds per plant. Ryecroft Brenda T, should get a 5 from it. Ryecroft Zoe, my only chance of getting a 5 for the small cactus from the new ones. Mediums Dikara Moon, should get 3, but nowhere near the size i was expecting. Ryecroft Rebel, i have 3 buds only that have a chance of being ready, thanks to the fact that they sent me something else, from which i should have lots ready Ruskin Bride, well after all the fuss i should get a good 3. And finally, Susan Gilliott, should get a nice 3, but it looks at the moment quite broad leaved for a cactus, hoping it'll tighten up as it nears full size. The idea this year is to show people as many different varieties as possible, and most of the above will go in the 3 vase classes. My regular varieties will go in the individual vase classes. Well, that's the theory and everything may change ;D

As a bit of a guide, it is far bigger than the senzoe that i grow 6 up. If i wanted a multi vase and wanted Brenda the same size as Senzoe i'd probably have to grow it 9 up to bring it down. However, blooms at this time of year develop a lot quicker so it may be bigger in September. None of my smalls ever reach ring size anyway, so it's a nice change to see something getting close to it

and here is Ruskinn Bride. It has been grown 6 up off a poor cutting!!! It is close to maximum size...the ring is not down as far as it can go and these are the 3 off the plant arranged. For all of you starting off on the exhibition trail, list the 3 things wrong with the arrangement. Tel can have a go too....

Ryecroft Brenda T plus friends....spot the thrips competition Excuse the dirty hands Never grown it before, not a bad size for my garden, grown 6 up. That was an early bud i left to flower to see what it was like. Probably one or two days to go, but rain forecast so thought i'd cut it.

By insects i mean thrips, pollen beetles, aphids, hover flies, etc, all congregating on the buds. Touch wood, haven't seen any earwigs or slugs...maybe those nematodes i watered in have done the trick, because last year the allotment had loads of slugs.

How tall was the plant when it flowered.....seems very early for it to be in bloom.

Doesn't do anything for me. Looks like the type to grow in containers, or as a bedding plant.

I would also add to that it's the way they take the cuttings and the tubers they use. Whereas i may grow 6 plants of a variety, if only one of them looks and flowers well then i will only use that plant for cuttings. I won't use the other plants, and that is why i don't use pot tubers. If you are growing for the mass market then such care is not taken. This may not be the case for Richard, but judging by the variation between the plants of the same variety i've received from Halls this cannot be the case. I always expect better plants 2nd season of growing a new variety, because of stock selection from the first year, and i'll repeat what i said earlier about suppliers, my Station House plants are all consistent, so it can be done.

From growing them for the first time, there isn't a lot of leeway between having them looking like above to going to far over. I would say they need cutting, well this variety anyway, no less than 12 hours before judging, because that one has gone to far over now.

Well i shall be on the phone soon to a certain dahlia supplier from Newcastle. Apart from dodgey cuttings received earlier, it now looks like half of what should be Ryecroft Rebel, a white med decorative with a touch of pink, are in fact turning into a massive all yellow bud that will open into something. I've looked through their catalogue and if it is a medium it could be Ryecroft Magnum. I will know in about 7-10 days time.
