Potted up a few Hootenanny seedlings, there were eight. There are a few seedlings to pot on, from the 2012 seeds, parents unknown. Look forward to seeing them Tel. I took some seeds a couple of years ago but they are still in the brown paper bag, no time!

This is a picture of Garden Friends from last year, with 9 petals.
I have a plant of it in the front garden, the first two blooms had 8 petals, last year 9, the two blooms on it now, the younger bloom has 9 petals and this one has 10

This dahlia seedling was labelled for another look. This one is my favourite so far. I like the shape of the centre (as well as the petals).

tel your garden dahlias don't look to bad to me its a very nice plant looking forward to the dahlia trialsand having a look at your new entry I have notice since my dahlias at the allotment how many people ask about then I don't know if they like them or are on the cadge lol but am pleased the way they turnedout as I had trouble at the beginning of the year in delaying putting them in the garden as we are waiting to shift and loseing labels when asked what varitys I have I just say this is my surprise selection as none have the right labels if any at all but I just grow them for fun which I enjoy I have a few varitys I think I ended up with about 220 plants that's enough for me am goin to try next year to grow them in rows with 4inch wire messh over them like the growers do I tried it this year with a few but I found I defenetly need a weed suppressor that way the other dahlias I just go round the rows every few days with a hoe I am realy supprised how well they have come on with the rain the last few days

Dahlia feeder roots are near the surface of the soil and spread out a long way. You could end up hoeing away these roots.

The seedling on the left (above) it's centre is closing up nicely.
I have given this seedling a second season. It is a definite Small Decorative, but would need to be grown under covers.

This seedling looks ok, I think it has the shape of a miniature ball.

This seedling looks ok, I think it has the shape of a miniature ball. This was taken in a better light and is more like the colour it should be.

Last year, when I was growing some seedlings, one of the plants snapped of near the base, so I never saw a bloom on it. Managed to dig up a small tuber to give it another chance this year, I planted it in the raised bed at the back of the house. This plant produced its first bloom about 3 weeks ago. Now if this dahlia had been planted on the allotment it would have been pulled and composted. The first bloom. The plant was left to its own devices to start with, it has now grown 10 flowering stems, disbudded the wing buds and and one pair down. Now this is the second bloom on it. Ignore the colour it is a dark red bloom, it is short of the small ring, I am hoping next year if it is grown 6 up rather than the 10 up as it is now, it may make a larger bloom That is of course the next bloom out, is like the latter and not the former.

Another good looking bloom there, Tel.
Seeing your seedlings bloom is a bit like opening presents at Christmas - as you never know what you're going to get. I had to stop growing seedlings as I spent so much time with them I was not looking after the show blooms!
