I have just been trying pictures again. When I click on the icon for "insert image"the words img/img appear on the screen .After going through the process with the picture then going back to the forum ,on the old forum these words remained on the screen but now they disappear.I have just found out that if I click on the icon again the words re-appear.If I then click on "paste"extra words appear on the screen as they did before but when I try to post it the picture doesn,t go on.

Today I have taken the first 22 dahlia cuttings.Just before I started, a dahlia exhibitor phoned me (the one I told you about last year who only grows giants).I told him what I was doing and he said it was far too early. He hadn,t even started his tubers into growth. He also said that the first shoots may be hollow and wouldn,t root.I knew about this possibility and one or two on Sir Alf Ramsey were hollow but I just discarded them and all the others were O.K.I have always started them so early and I know that more shoots will grow from below where I have taken the cutting. As I have said before I have 3 shows in August so I need them early. I have also pruned the roses today that are in my own garden (I have some on the allotment as well) I know that March is the traditional time but I don,t think it matters so long as the weather is mild. I have also finished what I wanted to do with the lawns.I went for 3 bags of sand and spread them on the lawns,2 on the back and one on the front and brushed it into the holes I made yesterday.I have not put any Autumn and Winter fertiliser on this winter but I decided it was too late now.I will wait till April and use a spring and summer feed.

Went on the allotment this morning. It was a bit wet for digging but I put some more manure on the runner bean bed. There are 2 rows of roses on the allotment ,one of hybrid teas (these are the ones Tony Bracegirdle grew for me) and one of floribundas.I pruned the hybrid teas but didn,t get time for the others.

The weather didn,t look too promising this afternoon and I didn,t know whether to risk going on the allotment.I have a lot to do in the greenhouse at present so I didn,t know if I should carry on with this. What made up my mind was that tomorrow afternoon Rosemary needs the car so I can have an afternoon in the greenhouse then. So I went on the allotment and I,m glad I did because the weather brightened up and it was nice.Thought it may be too wet for digging but it wasn,t so bad so I finished forking the manure into a bed I partly did last week then did one of the other beds. There,s nothing on the telly that we watch on a Saturday night at present till football comes on so I went in the greenhouse for a bit and took another 16 dahlia cuttings.

Raining all afternoon, hard at times so I went in the greenhouse. Potted 111 chrysanth cuttings that were taken on Jan 13th into three and a half inch pots.Took 147 cuttings that day and most of them had rooted.I did discard some that were not up to standard but there were 111 decent ones. The next job was to start into growth the begonias and gloxinias kept from last year. They had been in pots under the greenhouse staging and not watered at all.Removed them all from their pots making sure I kept them labeled.A few had been eaten by vine weevil grubs but most were O.K.I plant them in boxes and put them in the propagator but had only time to do half of them.

Showery today so spent most of the time in the greenhouse.Finished boxing up the begonias and put them all in the propagator.Decided to do the same with the achimenes next.I got a collection of about 10 varieties from Dibleys last year.I was very disappointed to find that most of the pots had no tubercles in.They had been under the staging over winter with the begonias and left to dry out .It is a few years since I grew them before and I had no trouble keeping them then so I don,t know why I have lost them this time. There were just 2 varieties with tubercles in .I planted these in margerine tugs and put them in the propagator with the begonias. Then took another 24 dahlia cuttings. It is only 3 days since I took the last batch .They are growing so quick. The begun the job of re-potting all my pot plants that are in their final pots. This is a job I will carry on with for the next week or so when the weather is not fit for working outside.I remove each plant from the pot and scrape away some of the old compost and replace with fresh compost. Most plants go back into the same pot but it depends on the size of the root system. If the roots have not filled the pot I pot the plant down into a smaller size.So I treat each plant individually and decide which size of pot would be best.

Not a bad day today so I went on the allotment this afternoon. I told you last year that I have lost the use of the polytunnel that I have used for 2 years .It is on another allotment and the couple on this allotment want to use it themselves.I had some lettuces in one of the borders which had over wintered.Because they wanted to use this border I harvested them even though they were small.I thought they would have grown bigger by the time they wanted the space .They were just about big enough to use so I took them home.I weeded where they had been and forked over the soil.At the end of each bed there is and area about 4 square feet .They are allowing me to keep my carnations there. Then I pruned the floribunda roses and forked manure into 2 more beds.

The seed potatoes and onion sets arrived at the hut this afternoon.I was going to phone the supplier this morning because last year we got them 2 weeks ago. However, the driver phoned me last night and said he was bringing them this afternoon so I had to go to the hut to receive them. There were 6 varieties of potatoes but I was diappointed that there were no Kestrel. He said that they couldn,t get hold of any.I consider Kestrel a banker variety and I grow it every year.I don,t know whether to try and get them somewhere else ,in which case I would have to pay a lot more,or try another variety. I weighed some Maxine and Winston out for myself and brought them home and put them in boxes to chit on the greenhouse shelf. Went to the allotment after and forked manure into the spray chrysanth bed.

Had a good day on the allotment today, both morning and afternoon.Forked manure into the dahlia bed. This took me all morning and part of the afternoon because it is a bigger bed than the others. After this I did half of one of the veg beds. Begonias and gloxinias that I had ordered from Dobies came this morning .I boxed them up and put them in the propagator before I went back to the allotment this afternoon
