Do you keep them outside in the summer Hywel?

That elephant wotsit doesn't look at all like the archetypal cactus plant. So Hywel, just what defines a cactus plant and what is the difference between cacti and succulents?

WF in the summer I keep them in cold frames, but the very tall ones stay in the conservatory.
SP a cactus has got areoles - like little points from where the spines, new branches, and usually the flowers, arise. The flowers themselves are usually funnel-shaped, and the ovary is always below where the petals join on - called an inferior ovary. The fruit is a berry.
Not all cacti are succulent. There are some belonging to the genus Pereskia, which are not - they've got stems and leaves like other plants, but their flower is typical of the cactaceae family, so they really are cacti
;D

That Elephants foot is fab. Tried to grow it from seed when I was a lad but failed miserably. I don't think the seed was fresh, at least that what I blame!

I like Persekia too! I'm reliving my childhood fascination for these plants reading this. I have recently bought (not a member of Cactaceae) this lovely Aloe somaliensis. Please ignore the filthy window!

Thank you Steve and Hywel. I sort of guessed it was something like that. Should have checked with confused dot com first.
