One can only imagine how the Mother of the little girl felt as she watched her Daughter being mauled by a dog. This happens all too often and so I've written to my MP on my views on dogs generally. I won't bore you with details but if you wish I'll forward/PM it to you.

I can tell you my views on dogs (i take it you mean dangerous dogs/ pit bull types/ and other dogs that have bitten). I thinks its the owners at fault and not the dog in general, any dog can be turned nasty it cruelty starts from an early age (you would not believe what some people will do do a dog to make it nasty!). The people who do this should be locked up and pts (take one dog from someone like this and they will go get a new one and start again!). This all gives certain breeds of dogs a bed rep because they are used for street fighting/ dog fighting and by the idiot big bad boys (and girls) as a weapon. Its a shame because staffys are lovely dogs (given bad rep) Akita's (also given bad rep, one of my customers has a huge white Akita, Beth always has to go and fuss him/ give him a love, hes just a big soft teddy) amounst other dogs. Many Innocent dogs are taken away from there homes (were they are loved) just because of the way they look (and some bissy boddy will report them for this!) (just like racial prejudice). Look at poor Lennux (google him if you need to) . Rant over but i still say but the b****d owners down!

I certainly agree it's the owners, if you're not sure on your dog, keep it on a lead, this goes for mixing with other dogs too, time and again, dogs attack people or dogs, because they are not controlled. I know Dylan loves children, but.. he gets excited and could knock them over, especially the littlies, I don't take the risk, they can pet him as long as he's on a lead, that way I have control, until he learns how to behave. It all comes down to Responsible dog owners

My dad used to have this pitbull that he got from a friend who works with animal rescue, the dog was used for dog fighting. It took him 3 long years before the dog even let my dad pet him. The dog was always on lease or on a separate kennel since it gets agitated and tries to maul our other pets. We had the dog for 8 years and the whole time the only person he trusts was my dad. Kinda sad since it was a beautiful dog.
Yep, I agree with Floydie and Grindle, dog owners should be more responsible when it comes to raising their pets.

I agree 100%. My son had a pitbull terrier some years ago - she was the sweetest, most loving dog you'd ever wish to meet. He had two little girls who grew up with her - they were 'her babies'. All that was down to her treatment and training by her owners. Then Kenneth Baker wanted all pitbulls to be destroyed. The family was devastated. Luckily, he made concessions involving micro-chipping, a tattoo and a muzzle and lead when she was out, so she survived.

They are lovely dogs really (if treated right) we could have had a pup a few years back (before i got rolo so 8 years ago now ) she was lovely but i said no as I wanted a Chihuahua pup. One of our old neighbours (from the old house) had a pit bull x boxer she was a stunning dog (looked more boxer) and soft as a brush loopy! ;D

Also i think a dog that has attacked a person or a dog does so for a reason, yes the dog will be pts if its a person its attacked, but alot more should be done other than just take the dog away. It should be assessed correctly to find the reason why it attacked, either the owner has trained it to do so, or in the case of a child has the child been left alone with the dog and tormented it to the point were it will snap! any dog will react in this way (say the child pulled its ears tail etc)! If my kids do this to my dogs (they have in the past) the dogs will give a warning growl and move away (the children were told off for this! it shouldn't be allowed to happen and children need to learn to respect dogs and learn dog behavior). Also the dog needs to be told no if they give a warning growl and be told to move away from the child. Even more reason why children should not be left alone with a dog! even more so if the child is unruly and cannot be trusted.

You echo a lot of our views, Floydie, you've summed it up well there.
I'll go on to say that a very high licence fee to own each animal would certainly weed out all but the very serious of owners.

You all seem to be as one but what's the general consensus as to what should be done....if anything!

More punishment for bad owners! and a ban on keeping dogs (as these people will ruin any breed). I also think the pitbull type dog law needs scrapping!

Maybe a license would help a bit - but some people wouldn't bother to buy one. I think every dog should be micro-chipped by law, though.

That is something some breeders are trying to push through anyway, that every breeder must have there pups chipped before sale, this will help in so many ways, but i think both the owners details and breeders details need logging! this will help if dogs go into rescue as the breeders can be contacted (i know i woulnt want any of my pups going into rescue) and also it will be a record of how many litters each breeder has a year (dam and sires details should be logged also) and how many litters each dam has a year (this will stop the bad breeders back to back breeding).

Well said Floydie....You are talking a lot of good sense here ;D
Five weeks ago my son was "attacked" by an Alsation, who was on a lead. He bit his hand (which was in his pocket at the time). The owner was very apologetic...especially when the animal went for him again......she (the owner) obviously had no real control over the animal....and my son had to kick it away to stop it from biting him again......by this time the blood was pouring from his hand......Even as my son was walking quickly away from the scene....the dog was rearing up on its back legs........ A visit to casualty resulted in a painful cleaning of the wound...it couldn't be stitched as the flesh had "burst".....The strapping has now been removed and the wound has healed well....it could have been much worse..
ps; He did not get personal details from the lady....he was more interested in stemming the flow of blood and getting to the hospital. He had a description of the dog and the owner and reported the incident to the police.....they weren't interested...

Is there an answer? The kinds of people who breed, own and fight these dogs are not going to bother with licences or chipping.

The owner shouldn't have been walking the dog if she didn't have control! I don't walk OHs dog Molly as she will pull me over and slips the lead.
