Tel, Seaburn asked if I'd need any lighting to force the two dahlias into flowering in June, apart from the heat in the greenhouse. I haven't got lighting in there atm. Is is necessary?
Sorry to keep asking technical questions!

Sorry to keep asking technical questions! It would be better if you had, but the days are getting longer now. Has scrumpy mentioned, they started theirs off at the end of Nov start of Dec, for early flowers, Just keep them warm somewhere to encourage early growth and then all you can do is cross your fingers and hope you have some blooms out for your open day.

Yes, Tel, he did. He says it might work - I have to pinch out the growing tips to encourage the side shoots. I'm not entirely sure when, but as I've only just planted them and put them on the heated base of the prop, there's plenty of time to find out. ;D ;D

Is it worth posting pics, of all the dahlia exhibits from the 2010 Harrogate Show back on here, as a new dahlia thread?

Most of my dahlias are making good head way. Trengrove Millenium, Oakwood Goldcrest and Marston Suzanne are very slow but are showing some signs of life !!
Ist cuttings will be taken later this week, those that are not hollow will be used for stock tubers for next year. Way too early for show plants. Most of my exhibition stock will need to be cut 3rd week of march onwards.
I'm in a way glad we have a bit of overcast dull weather back, bright sunshine is nice but it pushes the plants too far along too quickly. Lets face it it is only early February.

Tel,
When do you need your Sir Alfs for ? Normally mine take about 70-75 days from stopping to flowering.
I will try and take all from the same tuber to aid consistancy between the plants. One tuber has gone crazy with shoots, 8 eyes, however they are all about the same growth rate which is good.

Mark Hi Mark, i would not need mine in bloom until mid Sept onwards, so concentrate on yours first, there is no rush for me. Marston Lilac is taking its time Mark, it always amases me how how dahlia tubers that are placed on the heated bench at the same time, all show life at different times.

OK Tel,
I will keep you updated as and when.
Yes I agree with the difference in tuber growth, perhaps that what makes dahlias a test of one's patience. Its oh so easy to buy ready made plants every year and cut out all the hair pulling pain of growing cuttings from tubers.
Luckily I have quite a big fan base around my neck of the woods so early plants can be palmed off that are way forward for my needs.
I said this year I was cutting back and I will because I have to, but the tuber to plant stage will be as normal as I have been unindated with people wanting plants. Thats the easy bit, looking after them when they are planted out is where the hard work starts.
I enjoy this time of the year as you have time to think and plan and adjust when all is not normal. June -Sept you have one shot, if a variety fails thats it for 12 moinths.

Mark talking about varieties failing, anyone else have problems with charlie two/white charlie two going open centred last year? 12 plants grown as normal, same stopping and planting out dates, end of May,all ended up open centred. Soon as the buds started to develop you could tell they were wrong. I had 3 spare plants that i planted out middle of June in a different location that flowered normal. Very strange.

If you run short Mark, it does not matter about the Alf Ramsey, if i get any cuttings from Marson lilac i will let you know.
