OK Tel, I will keep you updated as and when. Yes I agree with the difference in tuber growth, perhaps that what makes dahlias a test of one's patience. Its oh so easy to buy ready made plants every year and cut out all the hair pulling pain of growing cuttings from tubers. Luckily I have quite a big fan base around my neck of the woods so early plants can be palmed off that are way forward for my needs. I said this year I was cutting back and I will because I have to, but the tuber to plant stage will be as normal as I have been unindated with people wanting plants. Thats the easy bit, looking after them when they are planted out is where the hard work starts. I enjoy this time of the year as you have time to think and plan and adjust when all is not normal. June -Sept you have one shot, if a variety fails thats it for 12 moinths. Mark I agree with that, we only have one shot at it. If you run short Mark, it does not matter about the Alf Ramsey, if i get any cuttings from Marson lilac i will let you know. No, the Sir Alfs are yours !! I dont really grow them as most of my giants are grown in pots and they dont do well growing this way !! even though I use 12 ltr pots. I have tried to grow them 2 up, blooms not big enough and to grow a pot for one flower is a waste !! The only giants I am concentrating on this year are Janal Amy and Trooper Dan, both Giant semi-cactus however Trooper Dan can be grown as a large. Mark

These are the ones I put in the prop, WF. I'm doubly pleased because I rescued two of them from the flower bed recently, on Tel's advice - and they were very healthy looking! I thought they'd be dead and squishy.
