Not a problem Floydie....if you want to take cuttings.....set the tubers in mpc...with the stem above the compost....give bottom heat if you can; water in....mist them occasionally if they seem dry....and sit back and wait ....If you are not in a hurry, just pot them up in large pots with the tops an inch or so under the surface of the compost, water in and wait.....In all instances, keep them frost free.. A Gold Star for a star pupil. :-[thank you kind sir

The National Dahlia Society, have relaunched their website. They are going to start a blog page, where anyone can ask Questions on dahlia cultivation to a team of experts.Looks like i am to be made redundant again. Surely they have asked you Tel ;D ;D...if not, they should....don't worry we won't abandon you ;D ;D And not before time too, the old website was well out of date and very rarely got updated. I know Rob Cheethham the new webmaster !! he also does the midlands website, so no dought he got asked to take over their dinosaur and bring it inro the 21st century. Mug shot of Rob !! Mark PS; he also has a liking for tel style trendy jumpers. Oh I say Matron !!

Just downloaded the dahlia schedule for the 2011 Harrogate Great Autumn show.
I noticed that in the Small Decorative Championship, they have reduced the number of vases from 4 to 3 vases, owing to the lack of entries in the last few years, in this class.

Found out yesterday from my mum that my late grandad used to grow them to show also. Not sure if he won anything she didn't say, she just mumbled something about her helping out and tapping the canes to rid ear wigs.

Not sure if he won anything she didn't say, she just mumbled something about her helping out and tapping the canes to rid ear wigs. You will have to ask your mum, if your Grandad did win anything with them and if she can remember what varieties he did grow in those days.

I'll have to ask her, She was only very young when he had the allotment so she may not know. (Would probably have been 60s/70s ).

One of my tubers on the heated bench has just begun to show life, there is a tiny, tiny blip. All my other tubers not in compost, not on a heated bench, not being molly-coddled are shooting all over the place.

Some varieties show signs of life weeks before others. My Amber Festival has been on the heated bench since Jan it taken root but still no sign of it sprouting.

Is the dahlia in a pot? if so you could knock it out of the pot and repot it with the shoot half buried if it is 3 or 4in long, this will give it additional support. Or if it is a tiny shoot bury the whole stem under the compost taking care you do not break the shoot off, it will come back through the compost. I have a few that is doing that has well, if you are taking cuttings wait until it is about 3in long then take it off. Other shoots should start to appear form the normal area

Are they kept above 50f if so they will wake up. Some varieties show signs of life weeks before others. I'm not sure what the temperature is, I'll have to check tomorrow. The thermostat had three settings, the highest was 'propagation' so that is what I set it to.

OK, I'll do that, Tel. Thanks. I won't be taking cuttings, though.

The propagator should be 66-68 f i am talking about those that are not in the propogator, they will think its time to wake up if temps go above 50f
