Thanks to Scrumpy and Tel for your input. I will be growing just for the garden to start so I will allow all shoots to grow and pinch out as need be. Showing maybe something to look at in the future. I have been looking for a Dahlia Society in the area where I live, Colne in Lancashire, but as yet I have not found one close enough. If anyone knows of one in my part of the country please let me know.

Well, I've got my first flower! It's one from last year's dahlia tuber - 'Famoso' Of course, the ones I really wanted to be in flower in June certainly won't be, as one of them has no shoots, and the other is way behind.

If you are going to plant out in the next couple of weeks they should be ok. You need to be stopping your plants around the 15th May try and leave the majority of the plants with the same number of leaves, this will make it easier to achieve the same size blooms.

Stopping, is taking out the growing tip of the plant. I will try to keep it uncomplicated has we are not talking NDS rules for your show.
If the majority of the plants have 5 pairs of leaves and you have the odd plants with 6 pairs of leaves snap the plant off above the 5th pair of leaves so the majority of plants have the same number of leaves, this will give you the same number of blooms per plant, then hopefully it will be easier for you to match the blooms for size, for the show.

Thanks Tel, so I need do nothing until the 15th of this month? I understand what stopping means now, I will be triple checking before I do anything though

We could still get a light frost now but it is unlikely. I have planted out all my other dahlias, they are where they can be easily covered if there is a frost. By the middle of this month all risk of frosts will be over.

Which leaves do I count? Are the little ones at the bottom a pair? The leaf half way up is on its own so I presume that is not counted as a pair. Does this plant have three or four pairs of leaves?

It is unusual to have one leave at one side of the stem, ignoring the tiny leaves at the bottom of the plant, i count eleven with the two small ones at the top, this particular plant as it stands now, would give you 11 blooms.
