It is unusual to have one leave at one side of the stem, ignoring the tiny leaves at the bottom of the plant, i count eleven with the two small ones at the top, this particular plant as it stands now, would give you 11 blooms. Should I be stopping the ones with this many leaves now then? I am putting them out during the day and bringing them in at night. Tomorrow I will move them into two trays to give each plant more room. They are filling the tray they are in and I don't want them to get too leggy.

to make it even more complicated for you different varities need fewer or more blooms to get the best out of them. And as a general rule, the lower down the stem the better the bloom and the later it flowers... over to Tel

Hi everyone Without reading through the many dahlia pages here but I saw last night on the NDS site how Roger Turrell has passed away. I recall Roger and Terry Bratcher giving a lecture at the Cornish Dahlia Society (CDS) Show 2009 of their growing methods and plots. V interesting for all there. I have shown in the company of Roger one year at the CDS 5 years ago and was delighted to collect best exhibit in show out of 500 vases, using a set of 9 Trelyn Kiwis. I recall he had a tremendous exhibit in the CDS Championship class. I recieved the 'Champions' video several years ago and would regard Roger Turrell as someone in the dahlia world I looked up to. Going back to that year I competed in his company, I think I spent 1/2 my staging time peering across at him and seeing how relaxed and professional he was. Sadly missed Im sure. RIP. Regards, Paul

I forgot to mention how only 3 weeks ago through a suggestion by Rob who is the 'webmaster' of the NDS website (the Midlands site also) I sent Roger a flashdrive who kindly copied onto it Powerpoint presentations including the lecture given at the CDS show of 2009. Paul

If I can send an open request to the site - I am always interested in watching dahlia films/presentations. If anyone could help and has films of their dahlia shows, or 'bigger' shows, such as those you compete at Tel, could you let me know as Id gladly forward a 'flashdrive' to you if you would be happy to copy onto it for me. Conversly if anyone would like the presentations I have mentioned from Roger Turrell then you can send me a flashdrive and Ill do the same for you. Although I have Powerpoint so was able to view the presentations okay then if you do not then you can download a 'free' converter, to say convert Powerpoint to PDF format. Either way could you email me in the first instance and I can give you my address (minimum size of flashdrive being 1gb) to the following: Email is - denzil.fisher@mypostoffice.co.uk Regards, Paul

There are no NDS rules to abide by, just 4 blooms in a vase, all entries in the 2010 class were not show blooms and if i remember rightly, the people who entered the dahlia class where in a clique, WLF would like to wipe the smile off their faces this year, between us we are going to see if we can achieve that. Size of blooms is not an issue on this occasion, WLF has 20 plants of Ruskin Respectable small semi cactus, the hardest part is the timing of the blooms, because this variety is new to me only started to grow it last season, so the timing for this early show will have to be a educated guess on my part. If we can get the majority of the plants in bloom for the show, WLF will have to choose the 4 matching blooms.

No stop them on the date i give you, except for the cutting that was late to root, this one will be a smaller plant than the rest. Ideally all your plants should have the same number of leaves left on the plants after stopping, even if that means snapping the stem lower down the plant, rather than just taking out the growing point on it. If you have the same number of blooms to each plant this will make it easier for you to match the blooms for size for the show. Hope this makes sense.

So look out for her staring role on the big screen in her new blockbuster movie, how i brought down the clique. ;D
