I grew it a few years back and could not stop it fimming but talking to a few growers last year the stock has been cleaned up and if you double stop it and grow it 8 up its ok ,trying it again after seeing some really good ones at harrogate from dave spencer and dave fowler .my society show is the 3rd saturday in september and there is a couple of local pub and working mens club shows after that shows after that.

well after one hell of a day, all dahlias sorted and most in position. Still in pots, waiting for a bit more moisture in the soil I use split green canes with a plastic support to support the plants. When i plant out they'll stay on for a few weeks until i tie them to the proper canes. Going back to stopping, this one was stopped 3 leaves below the growing point, showing 6 laterals growing nicely. Certainly helped them survive the gales of today

Well the last few hours have been bright sunshine with very little wind. I have just had a walk round the garden and I am glad to report that apart from a few broken leaves all my Dahlias look to be OK Fingers crossed that the gails do not return.

Hi I grew 12 plants of rosenndale lewis 2 years ago and only managed to show 1 flower in a single bloom class.I found the centres were blowing early and it was very clock faced it went straight on the compost heap.I also grew marston lilac a few years ago and had some great blooms but found I had to grow it 7/8 up to get it up to size and in my opinion this is not great for a mini.I have been thinkin of trying marston suzanne and barbarry pip myself but you can only grow so much and I had good sucess last year with the mini dec dikara superb winning a bronze medal at my society show.Never grown a mini cactus.I have already seen your website.would like to know how your suzanne and pip do. Suzanne is a new one to me but I'll let you know later in season. Barbarry Pip is a lovely looking bloom, very deep red, I guess burgundy in colour. However, it is naturally small. I've grown for previous 2 years and used a usual method for my mini-decs of double stop and average 16 stems. This year I'm planning single stop and 10up. Again will let you know how this gets on in the season. Lilac Ive grown before, I recall its a shortish grower. Lewis never grown before, I bought in some plants last year from a supplier and they were 'rubbish'. Regards mini-cactus, they have improved greatly in recent years and the Westons are really good. Pirate is exfellent for cuttings and produces showable nlooms especially at 'village' level. I grow 102 dahlias which is small in numbers so have to be realistic. I try not to spread myself too thinly. As much as I prefer small cactus I do endeavour to be a kind of all rounder. Entering multi vase classes I think is all about options. Hence why Ive taken on growing the mini-cactus, as they produce many blooms per plant, so as I say gives you choices come showtime. I am using this year as a kind of trial regards mini-cactus and intend narrowing down next year to one or two choices. Paul

Just back from rotorvating 20 kg of chicken pellets into my dahlia beds, going to plant out my poms next weekend and have a week off work 4th of june and plant out everything else then.My poms 12 minley carol and 12 moor place have alraedy had a stop in there pots and will get another stop a little later.Got 4 plants given off phil watson today, 4 of his own cultivar leopold sophie a white small dec to try, sophie was best seedling at harrogate year before last. still waiting for some plants to arrive from lochend dahlias ,16 grenador pastelle was hoping to get them much earlier than this has I wanted to be planting big plants out that have already had a stop so I can get another stop in them not to sure if they will be worth planting out now whenever they arrive. I havent grown Pastelles for recent years. Ive grown Grenador, Primrose, Barbarras, White, Gills. Of these I found Primrose was better in terms of non fimming. I didnt have a stopping date planned but would allow plant to grow on and stop when centre bud was pea sized, let all grow and reduce to 8 stems. Paul

Regards stopping - generally speaking I pinch out the growing tip no matter how many laterals the plant has (I reduce those shoots at debranching time). I usually stop during weeks of June. So for instance Trelyn Kiwi stop mid-June, Kelsae Carla I'd stop very late June. However where a plant is 'big' in size then I tend to 'hack down' say 2 or 3 pairs of laterals from the top using a secataurs. Paul

Well the rain has finally stopped but the gail force winds are relentless. Not sure how much more of a battering my garden can take especially the Dahlias.

Not looking good. No let up with the wind as yet. Had a quick walk round the garden and there are a lot of damaged plants. So far only broken leaves on the Dahlias.

Did your pastelles not go to big with just 1 stop and any idea when that stop was.Been on the phone to lochend dahlias and they say they going to be delivered tomorrow need to see how big they are and make a decision within the next 12/14 days wether to plant them out or just keep them for pot tubers for next year.not much point in planting them if they are going to flower to late or go to big,I would just plant some extra ruskin michelle.
