Has anyone grown Ruskin Splendour and Kenora Challenger and if so how well did you do with them? I do not grow Ruskin Splendour, i have grown Kenora Challenger for quite a few years now, not done to badly with it. This is one on the allotment last year, but they do need to be grown under cover though. Ive never grown Challenger any different than 4up, disbudding wings and 3 pairs, but I find stems can be a little rubbery on occasions why I dropped it. I have heard of a method from a toprate National winning Northern grower of cutting back hard to the ground, growing on those low stems, when the bloom is opening cutting back the calyx and removing bottom couple rows of petals (we Southeners done get as big a blooms I understand as Northeners).

Thanks again guys. I think I will leave it for this year and concentrate on what I have. Maybe next year I will just grow a few selected varieties with a view to having a go at showing. That means a lot of reading and research to do as well as picking the brains of those of you who have been most helpful in here.

Just been watching the week 4 video by Dave Gillam on youtube. Link can be found on the NDS site. If you have not already been watching his videos weeks 1 and 2 are there and 3 and 4 are on youtube. Very interesting viewing.

I cut mine back to the first 2 pairs of leaves, i wonder if it is the same northern grower, this grower comes from Blackpool, i tried the method of removing the first 2 rows of petals after i heard about his method, not tried cutting back the calyx though, but i will give that ago this season now. ;D

Hi dcdahlia Regards website, never heard of anyone having problem before, but doesnt mean there hasnt been a problem! The codes are there by the programme maker being Mr Site. Let me know if you have problem again if you wouldnt mind trying once more and if you have a prob' then Ill tell the Mr Site support people. Me showing at National - to be fair Ive been asked several times, and John Wheatley and Graham Carey have asked me to do as such. Several reasons really, it clashes with our County shows and I love supporting them, Im not keen on the travel about 350 miles round trip, also I dont feel Im the finished article yet and still learning particularly with cultivar choice/knowing what to grow. Maybe one day I will, Im sure I would have if it was closer. Furthest Ive been is Devon so about 140 miles round trip. That was 1996 and I achieved West Of England Novice Champion title. There were 'cream growers' in the multi vases classes and I was like a rabbit in headlights - awesome. Rycroft Jan - its the top mini dec according to the NDS listing. Ive grown it and seen it in a mates plots and niether of us like it. The petals have an odd lay to them, looks course to me. Maybe its one that needs certain procedures to get the best from it. This year Im growing Barbarry Pip/Maraston Suzanne/Rossendale Lewis/Marston Lilac. I nearly always double stop min-decs, however Ive grown B.Pip for previous 2 years and its not the biggest so Im growing on a single stop for this year. Paul

Not any more she doesn't ...they were some of the tubers I had to leave in the ground last winter, and I didn't have a pot tuber at home
