I cut mine back to the first 2 pairs of leaves, i wonder if it is the same northern grower, this grower comes from Blackpool, i tried the method of removing the first 2 rows of petals after i heard about his method, not tried cutting back the calyx though, but i will give that ago this season now. ;D When do you do that Tel? I do mine last weekend of June and the first weekend in july. You could do this now.

Off to a garden centre tomorrow, if Frank Taylor has sent his spare dahlia plants there this weekend, i may if i am lucky be able to pick up one or two. Any of the following will do. Barbarry Pip, Min Dec Marston Suzanne, Min Dec Bryn Terfel, Giant Dec Leopold Chloe, Small Dec Leopold Sophie, Small Dec Edwins Sunset, Waterlily I would prefer the Small Decs to add to my collection of Small Decs.

If you dont manage the small decs tel I will be able to sort you out with some stock of sophie and chloe for next year .I am good friends with the raiser of the leopolds phil watson ,I got a good deal of my plants off him this year after loosing all my tubers over the winter. In fact it was phil who took me to harrogate as I dont drive and he had some room in his van.

dcdahlia, if you find you need to buy covers then Ive bought mine over the years from D.T. Horn. Great covers and service is excellent with phone call to say when disapatched Also Id be interested in a tuber of Dikara Superb and Blyton Softer Gleamlater in the year (I can let you know what I have spare also). Just looking through your list, Joan Walker although Ive never grown, my mate Ted has, and I seem to recall him saying the stems werent the best, so if thats the case then maybe suggest a handful of Sulphate of Potash come early July time. Another Ive never grown is Ryecroft Brenda T, I was thinking of doing so, but Ive been advised by another Cornish grower that it doesnt dress back fully before the bloom is shot! Regards, Paul

No problem paul got about 20 plants each of dikara superb, softer gleam and brenda t put aside for pot tubers not as many joan walker but would still be able to sort you out with some ,phil watson always has loads.Growing brenda t for the first time myself but a couple of mates of mine have both grown it and said it's ok in fact i'm nearly sure one of them won a silver medal at darlington society show using brenda t in a multi vase class, trying it because they say it doesn't damp at all ,both showed it 1st week in october, dont know about you but I am sick of trying the dianes they spot something rotten in my garden, grew primrose last year and managed to get a vase of three last weekend in august and that was it.As for joan walker I find the only problem Is getting 5 the same size three is easy but sometimes strugle for 5.I won the small dec class with it at a local agricultural show against some illustrious company.

Regards Joan Walker, so you have experience and must find the stems ok. Maybe Im confused with another dahlia. Yes Dianes can dampen, I am growing some Winholme Diane (5 plants). Ive tried the 3 Dianes in different years. Come back to them this year. In fact my very first dahlia prize was my first year and I was Cornish Novice Champion with Primrose. But I recall the damping problem. I exhibit Scaur Sunset which I class as a horses for courses, not the best small dec, but is pretty reliable. Biggest fault is get some 'jaw centres'. Last year I grew Ruby, only because my Mum is called Ruby, ist a beautiful dahlia, again more open petalled than Dianes but damn looks good on the bench I had a cracking vase of it at Helston Harvest Fair, they looked superb). Its a dahlia that far outweighed my expectations. I am already planning for 2012, as I want to get back into the County Championship class so much it hurts LOL! Ive won it twice but been unable to enter for 5 years. My problem has been the 'single bloom large or giant'. Ive shown Kenora Challenger and had some beauties, but far too often Ive had nothing (poor stems, shaky heads). I tried Kenora Jubilee, easier to grow, but wasnt avail' on the day. So Ive made my 2012 plans and am thinking of Trooper Dan. The Championship classes to me are all about options. So 2011 is a 'test bed' for 2012 to me. Trelyn Kiwi is a must. Im growing mini decs - M Suzannne/B Pip/M Lilac/R Lewis, for 2012 I will narrow to one only. Im growing 3 msc this year inc. Hillcrest Candy again I will narrow to one. Im growing 6 types mini cactus, again Ill narrow down to one for 2012. Id be very interested to hear how you get on with the Small Decs (by the way Brenda T, if I were you Id be picking the experience of your friends regards its growing habits, feeding, watering etc etc). One last thing - what County do you grow dahlias in, as Im from Cornwall and wondered if your South or North of England? Regards, Paul

Yes paul I have experience of growing joan walker I've grown It since Its release and have had no problem with the stems, phil watson released It for a bloke he trialed It for and all the profits went to our dahlia society.I am from the north east paul ,bishop auckland, county durham.Thats why I won't be planting the bulk of my dahlias out until next weekend temps have to be down to 4/5 deg tonite and even lower in cumbria.Always wary of that late frost.I have taken next week off to get the job done

Will have to book it in now to find out what is wrong with it.
