We had a huge heron in the garden yesterday, I'm hoping that I have enough growing round the pond to put it off trying to get the fish, seems like the nesting season is here, so I'm going to have to be on my guard

Grindle, your fish won't be safe. I think you should do more. This is just knowledge from watching the heron on the drainage ditch which gives it a long run, but I don't think they need a big expanse of water.

Pesky Herons We still get the Heron sitting on the roof of the house at the bottom of our garden - I am sure it thinks their swimming pool has fish in it ;D

Our neighbour had this problem with his pond...once he placed a plastic heron at the pond side , it kept the real ones away

I have got a big metal heronish looking bird sitting by the side of the pond, so that might deter it. I really don't like netting the pond as they can still stab at the fish, then all they do is die, so no one gains, reading up on them, they say you can run fishing line round about 2ft off the grounds which will stop them as they are waders and won't land straight in the pond, there are a lot of shrubs round most of the perimeter now apart from a little gravel area in case anything falls in, I'll just have to keep a watch to make sure it doesn't come back, Dylan could have a bit of exercise ;D ;D

I will keep my fingers crossed that it is a one off visit. A heron visited my brothers pond, ate a few fish and has never returned.
The planting around your pond will help because they land beside the pond and wade in. Can you do something to stop it wading in?
I have a plastic heron, it didn't work here but then our garden is right beside a field where two herons regularly feed.
Dylan is your best deterrent.

I might try stringing the fishing line around the vunerable places and hope that a certain someone doesn't get tangled in it as he uses the pond as his watering hole. With a bit of luck it won't come back as it doesn't have good access

I've seen a heron flying low over the houses around here recently too. They used to raid both our neighbours ponds when they kept fish & a couple of times I found dead fish they'd dropped & another neighbour at the back put a note in the shop window when they found a fish on their lawn still alive & put it in a washing up bowl! One neighbour put a layer of net about a foot high around his pond, it worked but it didn't look pretty. The cats are a bigger problem now here, they keep killing our frogs.

The OH made an interesting observation, as we are in a drought and water levels are right down, the ratio of Herons to water will have changed so some of them will be looking for other fishing grounds.
