Does anyone remember that my Kalmia latifolia (in a huge pot) looked sad back in November when we had the very cold spell? I asked for advice on it. Here it is looking droopy. I wrapped fleece round it just in case that might help. The good news is that it's perked up again - it looks completely normal now. ;D And the 'Boulevard' clematis that shares the pot has lots of lovely healthy growth on it. One less thing to worry about in the garden!

I didn't know until very recently that fleecing only makes a difference of 2 degrees. So when you look at the extremely low temps we all had, it was bound to fail for some plants, wasn't it. In a 'normal' winter, it works well, though.

Some of the new plants from a plant fair Louise and I went to this morning. The Nurseries bring plants you wouldn't get in a GC. Cardamine quinquefolia - for shade. Soldanella carpatica x pusilia - pretty little blue flowers. Lithophragma parviflorum - pale pink flowers. Iris bucharica - I was pleased to find another one, as I loved the one I got last year. I got a Geranium called 'Prelude' and a Salvia pratense 'Royal Crimson Distinction', too. Both new to me.

In a 'normal' winter, it works well, though. I wrapped my dahlia ground tubers in 4 layers of fleece and they were ok for years, this winter 80% kicked the bucket.

Yes, Tel - down here, in a 'normal' winter, we might go minus, so the fleece would work. Not for -12, though.

Here are some more plants in flower. Clematisrose sent me this lovely Cardamine pentaphylla - it's the same colour as my Cardamine quinquefolia, but has pretty bell-shaped flowers. My Clematis armandii is in flower up the damson tree. This is Prunus cerasifera 'Thundercloud'. Last year I planted some fritillaries, and they're up and flowering again. I have a few magnolia blooms untouched by the frost, luckily. I had this plant in 2009, and lost it in that winter, so I bought another one and over wintered it in the greenhouse - which explains its early flowers. It's Olearia x scilloniensis 'Master Michael'. My Brunneras are in full bloom under the trees. This is 'Jack Frost'. I am delighted to see not one, but two buds on my tree peony! Finally for now, a few spring photos.
