I got the O.H. to drive me to J. Parker's garden centre as I needed some more hedgehog food & I came back with that, 2 pinks, 2 ivies, a pack of plant labels, some bird suet coconut halves & a climbing rose 'Sympathie' to go at the side of the garage!

That's the 'nursery' area by the garage grindle with pots of perennials from 'Secret Gardening' & various pots with things in which have been there ages from forgotten seeds waiting to see if they're weeds or something worth planting! I have planted the new purchases now though.

We were invited to go to a test event at the new RHS Bridgewater garden yesterday - only the shop, cafe & garden centre were open as it was to test the facilities. We got a free plant or seeds (I picked a little sedum), free tea or coffee & I bought a tray of 6 fuchsias for £10, a Sungold tomato plant for £1 & some twine & plant sticks. You could see some of the gardens from the cafe terrace & around the buildings & it's still very new & being worked on but will be great for us to pop out to as it develops & things get more 'back to normal'.

My latest purchase was from a local gardener, a beautiful burgundy coloured lupin called "My Castle." Anyone got any tips on how to plant it to avoid slug attack? It already has a flower spike on it.
SueA, pleased to read about your tester trip to Bridgewater. Looking forward to going and still mulling over whether to join the RHS. Aren't Salford residents lucky being able to go for free on Tuesdays for the first year.

I don't grow lupins libralady because I usually end up losing them to slugs & snails but I have found that if you don't plant them out until they're quite big & put them in a large pot instead of the ground they survive for longer or you could try a copper ring or crushed eggshells or an organic slug barrier like 'Slug Gone' around it. We went to RHS Bridgewater to visit the garden as well last week & enjoyed it although it still has a lot of growing to do, I'm a member of the RHS & was starting to wonder if it was worth the money but when they said they were opening the new garden here I decided it would be worth it as we could go there often as it's close to us. It's great that Salford residents can get in free but I believe it's already booked up for months ahead for that now & the community areas are great for local schools & groups & people referred by GPs for health reasons to use.

SueA, can you just turn up and pay at the door at RHS Bridgewater or do you have to book a slot online every time you visit? Can RHS members just go straight in without booking?
My latest purchase is a Peony Bowl of Beauty which has buds on so can't wait to see the flowers.

I love that peony libralady, I bought a bare root of it years ago at our old house but when it eventually flowered it turned out to be Sarah Bernhardt, still very pretty but not what I was expecting! At the moment everyone has to book tickets online for a time slot to visit the gardens at RHS Bridgewater including RHS members, you have to arrive within the time slot but can stay as long as you want when you're there. I'm not sure if that will change when the Covid rules relax but you can go & visit the garden centre side without booking or being a member & see one of the lakes & a little bit of the garden through the windows & from the cafe outdoor dining area. We've booked to go again in a couple of weeks hoping that some more of the plants will be out then.

Walked down to Lidl yesterday as they'd had some nice plants when I passed the day before, nearly all sold but I managed to get a decent little acer atropurpereum for £6.99 & a salvia nemerosa & white cosmos for £1.89 a pot.

I forgot, the plants from Powderham were Iris chrysographes, gillenia, a white geranium phaem and another little blue iris which didn't have a label

Thanks for the info Sue. I will probably join. It will get busier down there soon. Hope the traffic system copes near the Court House. Have you been to Irlam Station for lunch? Lovely sitting outside and food nice at a good price. Trains whizz by now and then but didn't bother us.
