I don't know why but I thought cannas were difficult to grow and needed sun. Now I know they can put up with shade I might give one a try

I had a canna 'Picasso' in a pot on the decking for years but eventually it died after we had a couple of really cold winters, it was hardier than I thought though.

I ordered a collection of Salvias from Hayloft, and they came yesterday! ;D I had my vouchers to spend, and I knew via their website that our GC had Candleabra primulas in, so I went and bought two P. japonica 'Miller's Crimson', another Aquilegia 'Colorado' and two pots of Veronica 'Tissington White' reduced to £2 each - nothing wrong with them - and I chose two plants in bud rather than full out. I picked up three scented Violas on special offer, too.

Great choice. I am really impressed with my scented viola, especially as it is perennial.

I went off to find 'something' to plant in the space made by the removal of the Buddleia. I had a few ideas, and I ended up with a Fatsia. It didn't get planted, though. I also bought a lovely Indigofera as there's a large gap to fill near the new Liquidamber.

Silly question - do dwarf lilacs sucker as bad as normal ones? One of the reasons I don't have any lilacs because when I was doing other folks' gardens lilac suckers were a right pita
