Yesterday morning I planted some Cosmos seedlings in a planter that our town council put around the cash machine close to our block of flats. They have been there for almost exactly a year but nothing has been planted in them. βΉοΈ The Town Mayor was judging the balcony when they were being put in place. He told me they would be "planted up in due course" but we are still waiting!
Last Friday a man pulled out the weeds that made the planters look untidy. As he hadn't been back to put some plants in the planters I put the Cosmos in the one I had emptied the old compost from the hanging baskets and the troughs into a few months ago.
I hope they will survive as cats have been using the old compost for a toilet!
I'll put a couple of pictures up later in the day from my computer.

Absolutely typical. Nice day, we were planning a trip out and somehow I have managed to do something to my foot. It is so painful I cannot put it n the ground, never mind walk or drive. No idea how I have done it, just suddenly began to hurt. Arnica salve applied, but with little effect. 3 days of sun forecast then nothing more until August, so trips out may not happen at all this year.

Last year the local town council put these 3 planters around the cash machine close to our block of flats. It happened to coincide with the visit of the town mayor to judge our balcony. I was talking to him at the time when they were being deployed. He told me that the police had requested help from the Town Hall to help protect the cash machine from being taken away in a lorry - this had happened to a couple of machines over the last year in other towns & villages - so the town council offered to put these planters in place. They are very strong & made of reinforced concrete, so very heavy as well.
I asked him when they would be planted up as part of the exercise was to brighten up this area. He told me they would be planted up in "due course"! That was a year ago & they haven't done a thing!
Up till last week they were full of weeds & looked very unsightly! Then a man came along & ripped them all out! But after I waited for a few days he didn't come back to put out plants as I though he surely would. So I planted out the seedling Cosmos plants I had on the balcony for which I didn't have any more room. When I changed the spring planting for summer plants I removed the old compost from the troughs on the balcony railings & from the hanging baskets. I then emptied all this compost into one of the planters. It was in this planter where I planted out the Cosmos plants. I hope that the cats using it for a toilet will now leave it alone & let the plants grow & flower.
I'll keep you updated on the results over the summer/autumn - if they survive!
Cosmos seedlings I planted out!

geumgrower, you really are accident prone, aren't you? Hope you recover from your latest one quickly! π Thanks, grindle π I've been itching to put some plants in the planters but there is very little room on the balcony to grow enough plants to fill even one! As I can see them from the kitchen sink I've been looking out for the gardeners every day for the past year!

Maybe the council could let you use the planters as an extension to your balcony balc2 it would be better than leaving them empty and maybe filling with litter and/or weeds.

This old body is beginning to fall to pieces. Shame as I have had it for a long time and I am very used to it. Foot stopped hurting almost as quickly as it began. Odd.

We had the most delightful surprise yesterday - our son and his family, who live in Spain, - turned up completely unexpectedly on our doorstep! π They will be here for a week before having to go home again.
We hadn't seen them in 5 years! π Our granddaughter has now almost reached her nanny's height and she is only 9 years old! But then she's a little under 5ft tall!
They have booked an apartment in the middle of town so they are completely independent.
Our other son who lives just a 20 minute walk away picked them up from the airport and brought them here.
