Thanks, Steve This morning I started preparing for next years Christmas dinner by sowing my Kelsae onions . Used the compost I made on Monday and sowed 30 in a half tray spacing the seeds about an inch apart and also sowed some in a cell tray,3 or 4 seeds in each cell.Put them on a propagator in the greenhouse which also had the leeks on. Put small canes up the leeks and tied them loosely to it to keep them upright. I then washed all the pieces of glass that I put on the seed trays when I have sown seeds. I have a lot of pieces of glass cut to the same size as half trays. If I am sowing a full tray I of course put two pieces on. I also have some smaller pieces that I use when I sow seeds in margerine tubs. Put them all in the greenhouse ready for use next year. Then I started tidying the garden by emptying a lot of pots that I had put outside from the greenhouses that contained plants that were dead or that were no longer any good. It started raining at 2.00 so I went in the greenhouse and started sorting canes. When sorting plants I had emptied one side of my larger greenhouse for this purpose.I have hundreds of canes and I examine each one by applying pressure to the bottoms to see if they break. I then sort them into the different sizes and tie them in bundles. Even if some breaks off the bottom they are still usable but go into a different size.

We are going to our daughters in Wales tomorrow till Wednesday so I won't have anything to report till Thursday but I will keep looking at the forum on my grandsons computrer. We always have Christmas with our son (he only lives local) and New Year with our daughter. I wish you all a Happy New Year and hope everything grows well for you.

Happy New Year to you, Rosemary & your family Derek. I don't think you'll be missing much gardening while you're away as the weather forecast is awful for the next few days!

Back to "normal" after a few days in Wales.Weather wasn,t good. The only decent day we had was Tuesday. It has not been good here either . We had an inch of rain while we were away. It is too wet to do much outside. It managed to stay fine for the health walk this morning but it has been drizzly this afternoon. I told you last week that I had been sorting canes into different sizes. I had tested them all to see if they were solid and if any broke off the bottom. Those that some had broke off and were less than 3 feet long I put in the bin . This is because I have a lot of 2 feet split canes that I use. Those that were between 3 feet and 4 feet I decided to cut down to 3 feet.Thought it was better if they were all the same length/ Went in the greenhouse after and potted 30odd rooted cuttings of fuchsias, angel pelargoniums and streptocarpus.

It managed to stay fine today so I have had a day on the allotment. This is the first time for a few weeks that I have been able to do any work there because of the weather.I have just been calling when we have needed some veg. The weather is still mild so I finished prunung the roses that I didn't get time to do last time. Spent the rest of the time weeding the onion bed. The ground is too wet for digging but I did hand weeding with a fork ,working from the path. Forgot to mention yesterday that the onions I sowed before I went away are growing.

Still dry so this afternoon I carried on with the weeding. Finished the onion bed then carried on with one of the other veg beds. There were still some turnips and beetroot on this bed so I pulled them up as I went along. The turnips were a usable size so I took them home but the beetroot hadn't grown very well.I had sown these in small coir pots and when I pulled the plants up these pots were still intact so this must be why the beetroot hadn't grown properly . I thought they were supposed to break down in the soil but they didn,t so I won't use them again.

A full day on the allotment. We just had a shower about 3.00pm so I sat in the car till it stopped and it only lasted 15 minutes.I finished weeding the veg bed I was doing yesterday and also the others but there wasn't much weed on these. So all the veg beds are weeded but I still have the chtysanth and dahlia beds to do.I also cut the plants down on the two herbaceous borders.

After four days without rain (apart from the quick shower yesterday afternoon) we are back to "normal"today. It rained all day from mid morning so all I have done is wash some pots.
