Probably have one of those barbecue summers they keep promising us now then Tel!! Hi, I am after the Barbarry's would you mind letting me know the supplier you are using please. Many thanks. I am looking for a replacement for Barbarry Pip as it is so difficult to get it to make a decent tuber (even a pot one). Thanks. I ordered rooted cuttings from Halls of Heddon.

Thanks woodforddahlias6 for that information. Do you have cables in the trays under the tubers? I am not sure whether or not you are supposed to keep them on the heat all the time or just until the start to grow. I am doing some searching for the trays now.

Yes in the hotbed trays, then the trays of yubers sit directly on top. I usually keep my tubers on heat until the weather picks up, then the heat is either switched off or turned down, If you have trouble finding the trays let me know and I will pm you where you can get them.

I was not able to find those listed from Halls Tel Halls do not carry the 5 Barbarry varieties I previously listed, they have not been released on the open market yet. I may have surplus tubers at the ned of the season ?

I ordered 7 more dahlia varieties today. 3, Barbarry Balloon3, Blyton Softer Gleam 3, Barbarry Parade 3, Barbarry Sunbeam3, Blyton Romance 3, Marston George 3, Westerton Folly. Harrogate this year, the only entry i intend to make at the moment is Birkenshaw Pudsey in the seedling class. I have decided not to replace my covers for the dahlia's. So i am going to spend more time on the breeding side of things, the weather would have to be brilliant to show anything else. Probably have one of those barbecue summers they keep promising us now then Tel!! Halls have these 3.

Some advice please if I may.
I took my first batch of cuttings yesterday but notice this morning that the leaves are looking black.
The parent plants are healthy with no sign of a problem,

It almost looks as if they are rotting; but if you only took them yesterday.......... perhaps the medium you planted them in was very cold and shocked the cuttings?...the affected ones all seem to be in the same part of the tray....is there a draught blowing across it?..that could have chilled them?....just a few suggestons.....

I've seen that before as it has happened to me on a few occasions. I would say it is to do with the cutting itself......if you look closely at the plants before taking cuttings, any small sign of blackness on the leaves will make your cuttings end up like yours. There is also the possibility your rooting compost may be too wet, causing the stem to rot. The good news is that follow up cuttings aren't normally affected.

I have also had this happen again this year, snute. My first batch of cuttings of Willo's Violet and Cherwell Skylark went black on the leaves and/or stems. The tubers seem sound with no blackening on the shoots from them.
Last batch of Cherwell Skylark taken from the same tubers but moved into the cold greenhouse and grown 'hard' have rooted in 14 days. Makes me wonder if it has anything to do with the plants growing in too warm an environment and therefore growing 'soft'.

I have had a few of my fist cuttings damp off mark.I think it was the couple of sunny days we had here(temp was 33degrees) and being at work I was unable to open the greenhouse door and it was to cold to open first thing.I think as long as you can give them a bit of bottom heat and keep air temp about 10/12 if possible the better it is.

Even though I have flowers out in the garden, I am enjoying reading about all your preparations for the season. I think it is true that anticipation is half the joy of gardening.
