I agree Mary. I love to see buds too and they last a long time until they bloom.

Took more cuttings today, up to 108 cuttings. Will check the first batches taken as they should be rooted now and ready to pot on.

Unfortunately not snute. I work every Sunday morning and cannot get time off.
Mini disaster on the dahlia front yesterday. Forgot to cover some of the cuttings and tubers in the greenhouse. Temperature went down to -3C with a -11C windchill, dahlias were black and horrible when I checked yesterday afternoon.

I hope you havem't lost everything, Mark! I think they will re-shoot Geranium. If they do I will take tuber divisions. Luckily it was only the tubers and cuttings of three varieties that got nobbled.

Hi wordforddahlia6 I have hunted for the 6cm deep 1100mm by 550mm trays for the soil cables but cannot locate any. Can find 4cm deep trays but dont think they will be deep enough. I am looking for the right thing?

Thats a shame Mark....do yu not have heat in your greenhouse...or some fleece? Yes on both counts, Lou. My own fault as I was moving the trays around as my heated area is not large. As it was a sunny, warm afternoon I took the fleece off - and then forgot to replace it later. Oops!

I left a young Delphinium outside, and it has simply flopped. I suspect that's it. I'm glad you haven't lost everything - that would have been a real disaster!

Been having some real problems with blackening of the cuttings, have now lost my second batch.
Just out of interest whats the mix of the medium do you use? I am currently using a 50/50 mix of peat and fine sand.
Thanks.

After losing the lot I have been using Canna Coco Professional which is a sterile, nutrient-free hydroponic medium. It holds a heck of a lot of water but, so far, I have not lost any more cuttings.

It is interesting that using the same mix we have both lost cuttings. I will have a look to see if I can get the Canna and try that. Whats your recomendations on its use?

It is interesting that using the same mix we have both lost cuttings. I will have a look to see if I can get the Canna and try that. Whats your recomendations on its use? I source mine from Growell Hydroponics online. It is quite pricey at around £11 per bag plus delivery and you may want to buy liquid feed also. However, I have used the same bag of it for rooting my chrysanthemums in for the last three years and have not lost a single cutting. I also grew two 'Trelyn Kiwi' dahlias in 10 litre pots of it last term and these two tubers are the cleanest and hardest tubers I have ever grown. They are providing all my cuttings material this year. One thing that is critical is the watering. The product holds three times its own volume of water, so a little trial and error may be needed. Having said that with bottom heat it should be okay. I would say give it a try. You can also root straight into sharp sand - check out the you tube video roger downting dahlias part one. Although I've not tried that myself. I hope the cuttings settle down and start rooting for you.
