Depends entirely on the variety and your soil as to how many to grow up. Be guided by what the suppliers of your plants say.
As to how to get 12 up, in the ideal world you'd have 6 pairs of leaves, each producing a lateral which gives you 12. Never happens that way, but with 4 pairs of leaves, you might get 6 laterals, so what you then do is double stop those laterals and that way you get your 12.

Is there a rule of thumb for how many to grow up for the classifications, for example say 10-12 for miniatures, 8-10 for smalls etc etc and what to do if the plants are not big enough to stop. Some of mine are growing slowly and if I were to grow say 12 up I would need six pairs of leaves and some only have four. A lot of mine are still very small too.

I used to plant mine through membrane to stop the weeds. Then when it needed replacing, I changed my mind about using it again. Under the old membrane, it was just a mat of mare's tail roots.

I've got 2 Ross Steph flowers half out on cuttings taken mid feb. Strangely they look like being bi-coloured? With a yellow base and red tips. (They are potted and are hopefully next years stock.)

Spent all today tidying up the dahlia beds and securing laterals, and double stopping those that needed it to try and get extra growth.Quite a few showing buds, all gone now They will get a high nitrogen fertiliser tomorrow with a bit of seaweed extract/liquid humus. They seem to be growing nicely. Incredible to think there is only a month to go before It'll be time to start securing buds for the show. The only category I think I'll be struggling for are the medium cactus. Finally got them all planted now but they are all behind the others.

Has anyone grown weston pirate before.I just wondered how many to leave on it. Hi, I grown mine at 16 up if that helps although I am struggling this year as the plants do not seem to be growing very quickly. I have grown a load from split tubers which seem to be growing quicker. Simon.

Has anyone grown weston pirate before.I just wondered how many to leave on it. The more the better I think dc. In rich soil it is a right handful and the last time I grew it I had 24-up and still had some oversize.
