Cut the first dahlia bloom of the year, an 'Ann Breckenfelder' (collerette) being grown in a 7.5-litre pot of Canna Coco Professional Plus in the greenhouse. Good colour but not correct form - one floret missing at top of bloom and an extra one squeezed in at the bottom. Looks good in a vase though! These are being pot-grown for stock for next year so I may not let any more flowers come on this one now I know I have labelled it correctly!

Stopped Birkenshaw Pudsey today, will be trying this one 6 up. There's you just stopping and me heavily disbudding Definitely further on than last year. Two weeks time and i'll be securing buds for the show. Quite a lot of small decs and cactus won't be far off. Ruskin Andrea a bit behind still. Not to sure about the miniature decs as i've not grown them before. Mary's Jomanda fighting hard to keep them back....could have them flowering in 2 weeks times easily. Mediums, should have vals candy in semi cactus, the others goodness knows. Medium decs, white charlie two looking good. Giants starting to take off now, they won't be far off.

My plants are still behind last year - probably at least two weeks - Hillcrest Candy in particular. I am putting this down to some really cold days and strong, chill winds - this is the fourth weekend in a row where winds have been in excess of 30mph. I will just let them flower themselves and not try and time them or knock them about.
Our village has started show again this year - after 10 years - and I would like to grow for that next year but it's an early show (10th August this year). I would like to try some giants/large but don't know if they would come that early. Does anyone have any suggestions on cultivars and cultivation tips to get a bloom that early?

Behind from last year? They should be ready by mid October then! The weather here is pants also. Noticed the first signs of damp damage on 2 plants yesterday. (Outside plants) I have a sickening feeling!

Same date as my show then. I've got Sir Alf, Bryn Terfel and Fairway Spur timed for 10th August. You definitely need early rooted plants. I stopped Sir Alf and Bryn 3rd May, Fairway Spur 12th May. Will know soon if we are going to get anything.

Took me a while to get them all planted but now they have settled in they have picked up and are growing away very strongly. I have been using a top dressing of groworganic as recommended by an National Society Committee member Terry Bratcher.
Heres to a good year for us all.

Wont do any harm covering them all DC. They're a fair sized pallet

I have 240 covered steve but 170 are not.The pallets come into work with four metre by one and a half metre alluminium on.I got three mates around and we got them all apart in a hour and a half and I have removed all the nails from the 3 by 3 which I am going to use for posts. So hopefully a 12 metre by 7 metre frame will be going up in the near future.

Sprayed all uncovered plants with a fungicide. Just hope I can stop the rot. Marston George is the most vigorous variety in the garden. I'm getting twitchy hoping that there is a growth spurt because at the moment they are just standing still( last 3 wks not much sun shine, just damp and humid )

Just waiting to see some buds on the giants. It looks as if they are about to show on Sir Alf and Bryn Terfel. Even Trelyn Kiwi is showing buds and they are usually a struggle to get flowering early.
