Cut another bed of dahlia's down this afternoon. I know it's a daft question I thought you were supposed to leave dahlia's until they'd got frosted ?? why is it better to lift them now ?? a lot of mine still have flowers on !!

For convenience really. Dahlias should be cut down to about 3 " above soil level, then left for about 2 weeks. This encourages eyes to form for next years cuttings.

Thought I'd better cut all my dahlias down today, in case the weather boffins are right and this storm (hurricane?) is as bad as predicted. Hate to cut down plants still flowering but better that than the wind uprooting them (they are on an exposed, south-facing allotment).
Lifted two 'Oakwood Goldcrest' that were cut down a fortnight ago and the tubers are small - even for this cultivar.

I think you will find most tubers will be small this year due to the dry summer. Perhaps where possible leave the tubers in the ground for as long as possible to allow them to grow some more. The long term weather forcast continues to predict mild weather. I started lifting on friday and so far mine are a good size, even Barbarry Surprise which produces crap tubers has meat on its roots.

I've not done mine. Too busy collecting seeds and I think that now it is too late. Weather here is not good.

All dahlias are cut down now, evaflow and groundcover lifted.I was planning to lift next weekend (won't be able to get up the gardens on a night now it will be to dark when I get in from work)but I think I will keep an eye on the forecast and if it is to stay mild enough I will leave them longer.I lifted 4 joan walker's that had been daisy eyed and they were decent tubers.

Will have to decide what dahlia's are coming out of retirement for showing next year. Kenora Challenger will have to be one of them, I think.

My covers are still up and I've watered some plants recently - Marston George. Not grown them before so I don't know if they produce good tubers, so I'll leave them in the ground as long as I can. My reasoning is, the longer I can leave them in the ground, the less time they have to rot etc.
