Cut down the 12 dahlia's in the garden today, all the tops are bagged up. Will take the tops down to the allotment tomorrow and put them all in the compost bins. Will dig out the tubers tomorrow, before the forecasted cold weather arrives.

Hi Tel, unfortunately have not kept any pot tubers as did not have the room this year. There are some dahlia's, that make better pot tubers than ground tubers. BJ Beauty alway's made a better pot tuber for me.

Hi Tel, unfortunately have not kept any pot tubers as did not have the room this year. I grow pot tubers in 3 and a half inch square pots. Got a base that holds 28 of them, spacewise about the equivalent of 4 large seed trays. So not a lot of space needed. I just leave them in the coldframe all summer and let them get on with it.

Scrumpy, Where do you get those from? Have you got any photos of one? Might make a good Christmas present.

Thanks Scrumpy I have a trade account with ibs so will look into the trays and pots.
Can I ask some further advice please. I have some varieties that have made really small tubers and some that just have a thick stem and a few roots (but have new shoots since cutting them back).. Would it be adviseable to put them into compost and on heat and keep them growing to get some cuttings to over winter so as not to lose the stock?
If so what would be the recommendation on temperature and light etc and taking cuttings. I have a large and high propagator but no heated bench. I have electric in the greenhouse.
Appreciate any help and advice.

After checking my trays they are 18's, holding 9cmx9cm Teku pots, as shown, together with some Bryn Terfel tubers that came out of them. As a rule I never use pot tubers, I grow them for emergency use only, and because I didn't get any tubers of Bryn I'll be using them for cuttings.

Tel the original tuber which grew on your cutting of B.Pudsey looks like it needs to come off because it is soft at the tip. There are lots of fresh fat attached tubers. I have never bothered with this before, but now I had better do it correctly as it will be another test for this dahlia. What should I buy from the garden centre to treat the wound? Garden Friends is firm and the tubers are very large. I have encased this in loads of dry used growbag compost inside a bucket and will do the same for B.Pudsey.

Cut the tubers back and treat the wounds.

Tel do you mean that I should cut back the offending original tuber, not any others? Yes that must be right as I just looked at Scrumpy's picture above. I will get the yellow sulphur this morning. Should I leave it for a while before putting it away in the dry compost?

Should I leave it for a while before putting it away in the dry compost? You only need to cut away any soft and rotting bits, then put the sulphur on. Then if the water is out of the stems you can store away.
