Noticed a dollop of frogspawn in the wildlife pond today. Q. If the weather turns really cold and the pond freezes over will it survive as it is at the surface. Do you think I should fish it out if the temperature plummets and store it in the g'house or just leave well alone?

I heard on a programme that freezing would kill it, so it might be best to fish it out and put it back when the weather improves. I don't have a pond so don't take my word for it ;D ;D ;D

I would hate to lose it when there is the chance to protect it. Last year we had quite a few tadpoles but strangely never saw any spawn. Will keep a watch on the weather forecast.

On my round of the garden today i discovered another mass of frogspawn. looks like we are going to have loads of tadpoles this spring. Fingers crossed. No doubt the heron will be reducing the amount of frogs.

We get toads in our garden. No idea where they come from, though. Do they start life in a pond, too?

they probably come from the rhynes and streams or anyone that has a pond nearby G, the toads lay there spawn in long threads

Interesting photo! I knew their spawn was in strings, but I've never seen it. I can't think of any ponds round here. They wouldn't use a running stream, would they?
In the Quantocks, there's a lake (actually a reservoir) and in the spring road signs appear saying 'Toads Crossing' with pictures of a toad! They're semi-official, but how you can watch out for toads on the road and steer round them I dont know.

I've seen the crossings, they get people out at night to see them safely over the roads in some places too ;D

On the A3 going past Wisley you get lots of squashed toads where they have been run over crossing to/from the large ponds there. Very sad sight.

Just over the Murray River near Swan Hill on the NSW side I had to drive at dusk when all the animals were going to the river to drink. The car was actually sliding on frogs which looked like leaves hopping. I will never forget it. After a short time, horses started coming and I got very nervous and handed the car back to my husband to drive. It was a huge station and the owner bred horses.
