I noticed a few days ago that one of the Dahlias that I purchased from the National Dahlia Collection was looking a little unwell. Today it looked like it had given up the ghost. On close inspection I found that the stem was rotten at soil level. The plant was the Pink Giraffe. All the remaining 19 plants I purchased are fine so only a small loss.

Don't think so. I potted them up when I received them and watered them in and apart from a little rain today, while they were outside, I have not watered them again.

I have a problem with dahlia smut paul, this pic is from the first year it appeared and by the time I found out what it was and how to treat it it had a good hold.so a lot of my dahlias that year were shown with very few leaves.I now control it by spraying once a month from planting out with fungus clear ultra.I also plant through mypex membrane now and that has seemed to help as the soil does not splash back up onto the plant when I water.

I think youre right about the splashing thing. Regards spraying I recommend to you, Roseclear, its the combined insecticide/fungicide and used from the start is excellent. I had powdery mildew one year. I trialled Roseclear and its been no problem for last 5 years. Check Ebay as its always cheaper there. Paul

Roseclear is something I use all the time and at the moment it is £4 for the standard size gun at Asda.

Goodness,my Senzoe are a different colour to yours. It's one i've reselected over about 10 years. Must be light playing a trick with the camera for mine to look so pink as yours is more the violet colour it should be. Unles of course i've been growing a sport all these years I'm sure mine are more purple so i'll get a picture with my new camera to get the violet/purple colour it should be. Lovely colour to it, i always grow it for Shrewsbury as i know it flowers early for me. Think the reason it is not grown so much is because of weak stems....you have to cane the blooms on the plant, else a bit of rain and it can snap. Though under covers shouldn't matter so much.

That pic of mine was taken with my phone, i will take the camera with me today and take another pic, but i am sure my bloom is not that pink.
