I grow what I call double purpose dahlia's. I plant some still in their 3-4 in pots, this gives me later blooms and a pot tuber, I found it had no effect on the size of blooms. I found that 3" pots usually meant the tuber being so restricted that I had to cut the pot away so I tended to use 5" pots for my pot tubers. left them in their pots and laid on their sides in a shallow trench in unheated g'house to overwinter. never lost a tuber that way whereas trying to overwinter ground tubers always gave me losses. I find I have to cut some pots off too, sweetpea. Though I can fit 8 tubers in a standard seed tray, for taking cuttings. if planted out in 3in pots.

Spoke to my Dad on the phone yesterday and he told me that he has written a letter to The National Dahlia Collection as the Dahlias he ordered in January still haven't arrived.
Not good. This has happened before, delivered early June last time.
Not good -
One of the varieties that he had ordered was Majestic Athalie.
All a bit sad really.

I can understand his frustration. Dad's order arrived. Of his 11 that he ordered in January. He received 5 that he wanted and the rest were substutions. Majestic Athalie was one of the ones substituted.
Oh and they were all Rooted Cuttings.
This is exactly why I was desperately trying to find another supplier. The same thing happened before and Dad had sworn black as white never go there again. Last time his order was for Eastwood Star and what arrived looked a, sick and b, the wrong variety.
Tel Dad would like to know how you managed to get such lovely healthy plants.
I was just lucky I guess.

I got my 1st bikini out yesterday and made a real hash of it. This oasis stuff isn't as easy as I was hoping it would be.
I've realised that I haven't put a lot of photos up recently. My planted tubers are happily flowering already. I do understand that you have to get your show timings right and stop at the right time and everything but when you have a little girl (pirate) who dashes down the garden straight after school, to see how much a bloom has opened up since yesterday, it is difficult to lop those stems down.
The Westons that I cut are not particularly good blooms, well actually they aren't even to my eyes but the Weston Spanish Dancer blooms, I am proud as punch of because I managed to keep that tuber over the winter. My Willo's Violet poms are flowering to.
I like seeing the Weston Stardust because it looks as pretty as I remembered it did.
Still don't know what I am doing, making up as I go along still, much I am sure I exasperate my Father.
Go with the flow isn't really good enough for go in a show....

Hi ML I used to use newspaper to pack the stems and then some moss to hide the paper. i found it easier than oasis.

Don't think that Dad has ever used oasis in his life, he's a newspaper man to but hasn't used moss but he does stuff leaves in with the blooms.
The Pom when he saw my wonky soggy newspaper vase, that I should have used oasis. I ordered some online, ended up with a huge box, almost the size of a wheelie bin well not quite more like half. My bikini vases were on my Christmas wish list. I wanted to learn how to put the dahlias in vases to make them look good, rather than fussing around with it over and over again. Spend ages on it. Getting very stressed about running out of time.
Dad when he saw my vase said 'Let's hope that they are not all going to be clock faced' - Weston Stardust.

Time for some photos...
Edwin Sunset my waterlily dahlia.
You would not believe how much excitement this bud generated. This is the dahlia that Pirate marched down to see as soon as she had got home from school.

Without thinking I took the photo after I'd watered it.

Sorry for the rubbish photo Tel
I was very impatient and I had to let it bloom because I wanted to see what it looked like, so I didn't stop it straight away but it is very pretty.
I like it. Very delicate.
Thank You.
