I guess it would look a bit vintage as it is 19 years old. Dad gave it to me to have a read because he thought that I might find this article interesting.

Haven't been down to my dahlias for a few days and they are looking very sorry for themselves. Considering killing my principles and collecting Mary's /Jomanda seeds but after some very interesting discussion, re. new varieties, tempted to collect those. I still have not found my pots that I used last year for the seeds, so I've still got seeds on kitchen towel around the house. I've took out some bulbs for planting and I need to crack on with my sweetpea seeds. Running out of time.

I am a woman without scruples I went down to my cabin to continue my search for my missing seed pots. Then searched for my sweetpea seeds - couldn't find them either (found lots of packets of seeds but no sweetpeas). So went back up to the house, with just the slightest of detours and picked these.
So potentially instead of packing away all of my seeds, I've collected 4 heads from a dahlia I don't want. Hate to think what my Dad will say knowing how much he loathes it; well actually he'll probably laugh and say why didn't I do it earlier.
Oh yes, I picked them in the rain. Nice sunny day yesterday and I wait until it rains before I go pick.
hmmm
I think that there will be loads of seeds but I'm secretly hoping for 10. Plant 10 seeds it is hardly likely that any will grow. Ironically if I don't get any seeds I'll be disappointed.
My Husband and even my Children this year have said I'm mad.
I think we all know that they are right.
Right coffee then seed heads, drum roll please... will report back soon.

seed head 1 = 32 seed head 2 = 14 seed head 3 = 25 seed head 4 = 27 erm 98 seeds = so could well get a seedling mucked that one up. That'll teach me to read posts about seedlings and new varieties. I've been corrupted, brought to the darkside.
Whilst I don't ever imagine myself getting anything as good as Dad's dahlias. I do understand how it exciting it is.Next step is to a, over winter my 2 Freds and then I plan to attempt to grow them as miniatures.
Well that's about at much as I can do really. Can't wait to see which seeds grow, if any and what colours that I get.

I've given up on my seed pots (still can't find them), so I've been bagging them up - better crack on because soon it will be 'telly time!' Yay!

Been up a while. Woke up early again, hip hurting. Anyway. It has begun... I've started looking at the dahlia classes in shows with an eye to matching variety to class. I wrote a letter to my local show respectfully emphasis on the respectfully more dahlia classes. Yep. Not exactly Oliver Twist 'Please Sir, can I have some more?' but on balance there are more Dec classes than ball semi/cactus. Mainly because the Dec classes, miniature and small Decs are separate whilst both the others have combined: either small or miniature ball and an either miniature or small semi/cactus classes.Well I find out November. They have changed them last time; a class that previously was a vase of 3 any type of dahlia was modified to a vase of 3 dahlias of any type which has not been exhibited under any of the other classes. n.b. My phraseology may not be perfect word for word from the show schedule but that was the change made. This generated a lot of strong feeling not because the class has changed but the fact that it had after my Dad had won best horticultural exhibit in show etc. and someone had lodged a complaint with the judges but Dad's exhibit had been exact as the class had stated. I'm going to say no more but needless to say, Dad made this class (a vase of 3 dahlias of any type which has not been exhibited under any of the other classes. his top target class of the show. Well he won it. Anyway... I just need to wait until the next year book comes out.
Back to the thread behind my original train of thought. I've started looking at the dahlia classes in shows with an eye to matching variety to specific potential classes (or vice versa) and hence my dahlia shopping list. The other factor affecting my shopping list is a mental note of potential colour combinations with an eye to future seedlings. (If that makes sense).

i.e. Dark coloured dahlias that aren't too huge for my garden.

Moonlight are you dropping any dahlias from this season and doing more plants per variety for next ? This is with a view to showing and also will you be changing the layout so you have you target hopeful seedling crosses next to one another ?

RaymondTo be totally honest Raymond I haven't got a clue what I am doing or talking about! Just mindless rambles of a woman who would rather be in bed with a toffee-dahlia* fog of a brain. n.b. *after reading an article on how to make dahlia wine, anything is possible.
