As for the new years resolution of getting and keeping the house and garden in order...
This morning I made a start. Today we are all back to normal routine so I was up earlier and had peace on my own to make a start for an hour and a half before work.
I got the house work fairly up to date while it was still dark, then I made a wee tinsy tiny start out the back, I turfed 2 big coal bags full of sawdust into the coal bunker (we mix it with slack for the stove, it keeps it in longer) and got the stove set to light as soon as I get home. Not exactly gardening, but heading in the right direction to begin gardening Hopefully I'll get a bit of time tonight to start sorting some pots out the back, some have soil in them but no plants, so that can be used to top up the soil on top of the fence in the morning when the sun finally comes up I also have a zillion pots sitting about everywhere that need sorted and stacked, some will need washed. On that note, the other day I mentioned on here that the xhose wasn't coming, the company have since emailed to say there was a mistake, and it has been dispatched. Hope it works!!! I really need to get sorted. So much to do, hard to know where to start, I'm just going with whatever catches my eye as out of place or annoying lol is what I do... at the moment.
I have a couple of big bags of bark in my shed that's badly in the way, so I might weed all my pots (been a while), give everything a good watering and lay bark over them, it'll tidy them up as well as getting rid of some of the bark. I've probably 300L or so, which is a lot lol but it was on offer
I'm hoping to get the greenhouse sorted on Saturday I actually am looking forward to getting it sorted. I also was thinking of sowing some tomato/chilli/pepper seeds on the kitchen windowsill... but I'm thinking it might be a notice early?

I shall consult Holy Scripture when I get home thisevening KC. (D G Hessayon's "The Greenhouse Expert"). Some websites suggest that - in a heated environment - you can sow tomato and chilli pepper seeds in January. However, they suggest a propagator environment for the chilli's. Perhaps this would be an ideal situation for daitheplant's "plastic bottle" passive cloches/propagators ? (picture from daitheplant's post in the New Allotment thread. )

That sounds like a plan. Good thinking

Hiya KC, I have consulted the Scriptures, and Hessayon recommends late February for planting/germinating Chilli pepper seeds indoors. HOWEVER, At the risk of being accused of Heresy (if not outright Blasphemy), I don't believe that Gerald - for all his horticultural erudition - has ever encountered Daitheplant's "Bottle-Cloches". My 'gut feeling' (and I am VERY well developed in the Stomach department) is to follow your original instinct, and "Sow, and be damned", but to use daitheplant's concept (or something similar). Actually... and perhaps daitheplant could confirm this ... perhaps the old "transparant plastic bag" trick would be best for initial germination/early growth, with the Bloches (1) being brought in once they have sprouted a bit ? Notes: (1) "Bloches": a Cloche made from a plastic Bottle, as created by daitheplant

roofgardener You are an eejit lol but Thankyou I will sow some this week in bags and bottles as well as some back ups perhaps next month if needs be When I got home from work I started stacking my pots, of course I had the stove lit and the dinner on first lol, hubby conked out next to me, hard first day back to work after the holidays, but I'm sure he'll waken when he gets the waft of rice pudding from the oven lolin the mmeantime I think I'll put the kettle on, I have a couple of gardening magazines to read and seed catalogues to depress and frustrate myself over

I had a peep in greenhouse earlier. There's 3 wee bits of white fluffy stuff on the ground. First thought of teddy bear stuffing quickly moved to something less pleasant. Any thoughts?

Roofus, if "bloches" are unavailable then yes, use CLEAR plastic bags. Insert a small cane in the pot though to keep the bag from the growing area.

Ahh... right... so ideally, it should be Bloches from the outset ?

My life is all about gardening and I have no intention of giving any of it up. May I suggest you try Glucosamine, which is pretty good at easing/repairing joint pain/damage? I just mentioned to my hubby about glucosamine being good for joints, his reply? So is silicone lol
