This morning I timed by stopwatch how long it took to access my first bookmark from the moment I switched on. It took 7m. 31s and then as soon as I clicked on the bookmark the screen froze so I had to use the task manager to clear that and start the whole process again which I didn't time but was at least as long if not longer so you can understand the frustration I feel with my PC. I daresay I could pay someone to improve it but its not money I have to spend.....priorities and all that. What I tend to do is switch on and go and have a cuppa or something then click on whatever and go and have a shower and by that time it is sometimes but not always ready to use. Mind you computers do have their good points. The bacterad for the pond which I ordered yesterday arrived this morning. I call that good service.

Sweetpea, how often do you run diskcleaner and do a defrag?

When you do 'ctrl alt del' to get Taskmanager, do you have a whole lot of programs running on the list? If so, you probably have a lot of junk on your computer running itself, that you need to get rid of.
Also, a program like CCleaner would probably help. Gets rid of your junk files. It's not going to fix and old 'puter doing stuff like that, but will help a bit. My husband is the technology port of call for all our family and old lady friends so I know that!

Sweetpea, how often do you run diskcleaner and do a defrag? At least weekly. My AV program also does it automatically.

No, quite the opposite. Usually only the one in use.

We've had a new hub installed, as we're getting super-fast broadband this week - my iPad doesn't like it at all, and is thoroughly discombobulated.

We have had superfast with Virgin for about 3 months. Have to use the laptop for the full benefit. I turn the desktop off about 7.30.

On the Taskmanager, it's the 'Processes' and 'Services' panel that may be hiding a bunch of stuff you've got running in the background. (Tbh, unless you know what you're doing with the services etc listed as running, you could do more harm than good if you turn them off.) You need a Solid State Drive SSD's are brill - as my husband says, it doesn't matter if your PC is running loads of junk you don't want, as it does it at the speed of light anyway
