On the Taskmanager, it's the 'Processes' and 'Services' panel that may be hiding a bunch of stuff you've got running in the background. (Tbh, unless you know what you're doing with the services etc listed as running, you could do more harm than good if you turn them off.) Y ou need a Solid State Drive SSD's are brill - as my husband says, it doesn't matter if your PC is running loads of junk you don't want, as it does it at the speed of light anyway Will check on that bess. Not heard of it before.

Bess I spoke to the computer guy at the market this morning re SSDs and as luck would have it he was checking one out at the time so I got a demonstration and it is fast, very fast. The downside being that that particular one would set me back £400.00 so although there was a cheaper one I think I will just have to put up with what I have. One day pehaps in my lifetime (though doubtful) we will get cable in this neck of the woods. We had cable in Surrey and that really was fast.

I keep losing my task bars, both top and bottom. Please does anyone know how to restore them? I think it's simple when you know how - but I don't.

The laptop runs on windows 8+ I believe. XP is now unsupported.I am aware of that but I am not about to cough up for an upgrade by my local PC guy. At least not yet. Sweetpea, windows 8 wasn't an upgrade, it's a complete new operating system, and was available for £25 pounds last October, for windows operating users. Unfortunately its over £100 now. Bes is write, you need to install the Ccleaner download to clean all your unwanted and temporary files. You all need to check if your deleting your history and cookies. These really slow your system down. Also have you open your tower case and removed the dust that gets sucked in the machine. This causes the CPU to overheat and slows down. When you do this, use a sort paint brush and hoover, but try not to let the hoover head bang into some of the sensitive bits. A great call would be to get a Solid state disc as suggested, this can be done for a relatively small price. Believe me, getting rid of computer frustration will make you feel so much better

Don't pay silly money for a SSD, I managed to get mine for £37.50, been running for two years now with no problems. Just had a quick look on amazon and a decent ones about £80 to £120. I know that's a lot of money, but when you think how much electricity, waiting to load, plus all that computer rage, it will be worth it, honestly .

@markymate, what do you think of windows 8? personally I find it a pain, esp if you try and upgrade to 8.1, caused nothing but problems

Both times I backed up my files, then cleared the rest to make it a new install, takes a bit longer, but it doesn't leave any unwanted bits behind . I'm very lucky, my older brother was in computers from the age of 18, he's now 65, and happily retired to a lovely village in Shropshire, fixing peoples computers for meat parcels and more importantly wine . Most peoples computers in Clun work just fine. He's my teacher and SAFETY NET!

My first computer was a sinclair ZX81 (1981) followed by a few I can't even remember the names of and still seem to have various problems to have to sort out only to find further problems. It seems like a never ending journey which I don't particularly enjoy but have to make the most of it. Life was much simpler in the '50s

Yes sweetpea, it was certainly a better world. When he first started the computer was the size of a house, wrapped in a office block . He still does a bit of work for computer firms testing new running system and software, but says it's all getting a bit mad. The one thing he always says, is keep your computer clean, always delete cookies and histories and temporary files. Easier said than done I know

I have Windows 8.1 on my laptop but still prefer to use my desktop with XP.
