I went to the local garden center, oh my gosh, whoever does the Christmas decor there has more tinsel than sense A giant orange blow-up Santa in the car park was just the tip of the iceberg. (I'm assuming he was red at some point.) So many flashing lights, and a life size Aslan (?) and polar bears and reindeers, but the worst bit was the same piece of Christmassy music over and over and over. I'd never heard it before I went in the garden center but I can still hum bits of it now Unfortunately I needed a fair bit of shopping there. Anyway they had some gorgeous orchids and stuff for gifts, so I had to forgive them.

You'll have to take earplugs next time Bess or some headphones with alternative music on! Did you get it sorted out in the end Geranium ? There should be an email address or phone number on the New Scientist website contact page, I used to get New Scientist when I was at school, some interesting articles, I used to mainly read the biology items, a lot of the rest of it probably went straight over my head!

What, no hot cross buns, daitheplant? Yes, thanks, SueA, I discovered the correct phone number tucked away at the bottom of the web page, so all is well. OH will get his 'comic' every week. I don't read it - it's a bit too technical for me. We went to the 'treasure trove' shop at the other side of the Quantock Hills yesterday, did some shopping and went to the really, really nice little cafe for coffee. We just need one more gift for our almost 14 yr. old grandson. I'm wondering what music he likes - a CD would fit the bill. My morning out was perfect because the church was open this time! We looked in awe at the carvings on the bench ends and the wonderful double-barrel roof, complete with carved bosses. It is supposed to have the best carvings of any church in Somerset, and I believe it now! Wonderful. I came back home ready to work - and have finished writing all the Christmas cards! OH is going to post them this morning. My halo is shining.

I love looking at old churches and churchyards. There are several near here but they are locked up - sad they can't be left open these days.
Cream eggs ? they can't wait, can't they ...

I know, daitheplant - and they are something else that's lost their meaning. They're just 'buns' to most people now. Help please - what on earth can I get for my almost 14 yr. old grandson? I have a 'cool' T-shirt for him, but what else can I get? Any bright ideas out there? He is very much into athletics and guitar playing.

When you are thinking about a present for Geranium's grandson, would you please also rack your brains for an idea for stepgrandson, who likes electronic 'stuff'. He is addicted to his tablet and games. I am talking about an unhealthy addiction which usually ends up in sulks when anything else is considered. He is a 'step' sometimes and when he is good he is a 'grandson'. My nasty side!

I know what you mean Bess . we went to our favourite nursery yesterday as a family to "choose the tree" and we found tinsel music and trees and . I did manage to rescue a couple of small lonesome helebores and a very small skimmia. how sad I thought as I wandered around , where are all the overwintering cuttings , small trees being nurtured for a few years .... nothing . seems just like a shop now with seasonal stuff bought in

Have a look at the 'Wiggle' website Geranium, my son's into athletics/gym and he buys/or is given items from them. I can vouch for their speed of delivery
