Welcome to my RoofGardening Blog. Hopefully, as the seasons relentlessly march on, this will become a record of how I make the same mistakes over and over again. OK, here's the area we are talking about. So, the light blue area (roughly 20' x 20'), plus the "extension", is what I have to work with. I also use the chainlink fence 'downstairs' to grow runner beans. These runner beans are the things labelled "Runner Beans" in the diagram above.

The older versions are now free to download. Let me know if you would like a copy. It's not for the faint-hearted, however, and your idea of using excell (coloured cells, I assume ? ) sounds like an excellent idea.

Hiya Fiddler, I like your blob name. Can tell it is going to be fun reading. Especially like the 'pointless chimney' I WAS told what it was originally for, but I can't remember. I think the shop below might originally have had its own micro-bakery, making very small loaves, and the chimney may have led to a small wood-burning baking oven ? Or possibly a bread-burning wood oven ? But that might just be local legend. A bit like the one about the No. 6a bus, and the Hanging Gibbet.

OK... I took some rather blurry photographs thismorning. (I will try and improve on them). It's all looking a bit sad and tatty at the moment, following high winds that blew everything all over the place. Looking to the Northeast. The low wall is one of the sunniest bits. Currently in residence, going around clockwise; Rosemary, Mint, Chives, Thyme (several pots), Lavender, various heathers, Parsley, Some sort of tall yellow flower (now dead). On the "outside loo" wall/table, we have tomatoes (still ripening, incredibly), some Cinereria Silver Dust (?spelling?), Primroses. On the side wall are some (dead/dying) Morning Glories. Moving round a bit to look to the East.. On the far wall: storage. Moving back to front: Boris the Basil Bush, and Mr Thingy (which - apparently - is a Hollyhocks variant. It has grown vigorously all summer, but has not put out any flowers.) On the improvised green 'standing' are some dying bedding plants, and in the foreground a Lemon Balm plant. Finally, peeking south down the little 'extension' corridor.... A bit of a 'clutter zone' at the moment. The trough on the white plastic table (left) has three strawberry plants, in which I have high hopes ! The white wooden door leads down to the ground level side-path, which in turn leads to the front of the building (main road), and also the rear (car parking yard). Oh... and the "Pointless Chimney"... "It serves no purpose whatsoever...." Well, that's it. Not very impressive, I'll grant you. I'll be doing tidying-up over the course of November, and gradually emptying (and storing) plantpots as the plants gradually die off. But I guess the next MAJOR event will be The New Greenhouse. (which has been downgraded from a rigid-frame 'proper' greenhouse, to a polyprop 'tunnel' style greenhouse, on the basis that I think a rigid greenhouse could be destroyed by the winds).

Oh... and the "Pointless Chimney"... "It serves no purpose whatsoever...." I like the chimney! I wonder what it was used for. How old ish is your home? Also what is the green strap running around some of your garden?
Previous owners of our house removed the fireplaces in the house. So we have to have a magic key to let Father Christmas in.

I will ask the landlord about the chimney, Moonlight.
The green strapping is a slightly elastic form of conveyor belting wot I ... ummm... borrowed from work. I previously had three tomato 'houses' in the gap between the Pointless Chimney and the Outdoor Loo's. (a bit like the shelving unit that is still there). These kept blowing over, so I put the strapping up to hold them in place. Being a bit stretchy, it also acted as a shock-absorber.
To illustrate the shock-absorbing function:
"Nottingham Forest have just won the Cup"
Tomato house #1 (no belting) THORS TEETH !! <shatters into a thousand pieces> Tomato House #2 (with belting) REALLY ? <bend...stre-e-e-tch ..> Gosh, whoda thunk it ? Could I have some water now please ?
