Tubers looking good there Raymond , your cuttings doing well think you've cracked it mate. Hi Steve cuttings looking bad Limp flagging and pale. Lost another last night taking it to 5. Those pellets holding way to much water I also find you cannot get the cutting in deep enough. Emergency treatment starting tonight. Moving the cuttings into potting compost perlite mixture . Will also try Jack gotts method. Getting the sand on Thursday. the tubers looking great just wish the cuttings where the same. I will sort it I need to or disaster around the corner. Hi Raymond, Interested to know. What is the Jack Gott method?

Hi diggie the Jack Gott method is that he roots his cuttings in plasters sharp sand only around the edges of a 3 inch pot.

Ian k Thanks he also cold roots them diggie. Jack confirmed the pellets holding too much water. Don't have sand in stock so tonight it's Sinclair potting compost with Perlite. He also said to only water again once the surface sand is dry. Bar the occasion mist if required. On train home hopefully have some cuttings left to salvage. Don't care about the novelties plenty more coming but care I sort this out before I take the main show batch over the next two to three weeks. More concerned about zoe and Ursula as I only have one tuber. Diane, Mary's I have 4 , pirate 3, candy 2. So hopefully they will throw enough And I can root them successfully . . Will get the sand on Thursday using 3.5inch square pots should take between 4 and 8 cuttings depending on size and thickness. There is a guy in Yeovil called Roger. He uses sand. He has a video on YouTube

Hi ste b I have I hope salvaged the situation. I had to use what I had in stock. So cuttings in 3.5 inch square pots max four per pot around the edge.I know roots will tangle but had to move fast. Used sinclair traditional potting compost mixed with Perlite and I had a little horticultural sand left so mixed that up. Seems light with a bit of bite to it. Four parts compost , 2 parts Perlite 1 part sand. Water in left to drain . Re applied strike to the cuttings dibbed and in they went. Gave them a mist and that's it. Back in propagator heat at 14 degrees . Those pellets full of water. I think if using them you need to squeeze out the excess. Binned one more peach delight. Leaves had all wilted . Good thing though the new cuttings coming on the tubers look good. Nice thin stems . If these root then I will try not to use them. Cuttings already been stressed enough won't make good plants. On a better note my begonia and other seedlings coming on great in unheated propagators in summer house. thank God for something positive. Going to go the Jack gott route starting on Thursday .

You could turn heat down to 10 or less if you wanted I've used sand in the past it's ok, don't worry about roots tangling , when they root give them a watering before you pot on .

The fast becoming hedge of dahlia cuttings. Was a frustrating take of cuttings tonight lots hollow but mostly first cuttings of a variety. Did get more winholm Diane, Clearview Sundance x 2 , parkland rave x 2 and an assortement of others lots to take at the weekend. Some in a couple of days. Cuttings look much happier out of those pellets. Will stick to the compost, Perlite and sand. Hopefully some will root soon.

Unusual that. Are you taking the cuttings too far away from the tuber?

No just above the Tuber scrumpy under the leaf joint. Lots coming on ursula 17 and should all the ready roughly same time. Zoe was slow but motoring now lots on her have taken some already and look nicer thickness. Mary's jomanda and Weston pirate are what I am concerned with not many so far. Pirate I should have enough. Winholm Diane loads. Candy lost some of the early ones in those pellets but lots coming now. Peach delight is weird the thinnest weak looking cuttings. All the first ones failed in those pellets growing tips went black .

Lou78W the tubers had just had there once a week watering this time first feed with miracle grow After I dampened the compost first with a mist of water. I let it dry out in between. Also using Jack's magic which is rather dark in colour to begin with. I am very nervous of over watering after that pellet disaster. Never again ! Pretty much all the cuttings that came in the first batch in the pellets have been binned with damping off. I think some have started to root. Upright good reflex on leaves and when you just tease them some resistance. Leaving them another week to be sure. Each one now precious as I don't have the numbers I need. dahliadave Hapet pearl not rooting as you said.
